A massive warehouse fire in California has led to the arrest of a suspect, with authorities claiming the act was intentional and caused huge financial damage. The shocking incident has raised concerns about workplace anger and its possible consequences.
Massive fire at warehouse
A large fire broke out at a warehouse owned by Kimberly-Clark in Ontario, California, during the early hours of April 7.
The fire quickly turned into a six-alarm emergency, drawing a massive response from firefighters. Around 175 firefighters and multiple fire trucks were involved in controlling the flames.
The warehouse, which covered around 2 million square feet, suffered severe damage. Officials estimate the loss to be nearly $500 million.
Arrest of the suspect
Authorities arrested 29-year-old Chamel Abdulkarim on April 7 in connection with the fire. He has been charged with arson of a building involved in interstate and foreign commerce.
If found guilty, he could face:
- A minimum of 5 years in prison
- Up to 20 years in federal prison
He was also presented in court on state charges related to the same incident.
Allegations and evidence
According to investigators, Abdulkarim allegedly recorded himself while setting fire to pallets of paper products inside the warehouse.
Reports claim he made several statements expressing frustration about wages and working conditions. In the alleged video and messages, he blamed low pay and corporate practices for his actions.
Authorities also say he sent text messages and made phone calls where he admitted to starting the fire.
Fire response and damage
The fire started shortly after 12:30 a.m. and spread rapidly inside the building. Firefighters initially tried to control it from inside but had to step back due to the intensity of the flames.
They then continued firefighting efforts from outside. It took several hours to bring the situation under control.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the financial loss is considered extremely high.
