A New Jersey man has been charged after a video showing him yelling at a Black woman in their neighborhood spread widely online. Authorities said the incident led to criminal charges including harassment and bias intimidation after investigators reviewed the footage and statements connected to the case.
The viral video sparked strong reactions on social media, with many people expressing concern over the aggressive confrontation captured on camera.
New Jersey Man Charged After Viral Neighborhood Confrontation
Thomas Diiorio, a 40-year-old man from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, was charged following the incident that happened on May 18.
According to the Mount Laurel Police Department, officers initially responded to reports involving a juvenile-related dispute at around 6:30 p.m.
When police arrived at the scene, the individuals involved were separated. At that time, both sides accused each other of wrongdoing, but no criminal complaints were immediately filed.
Video Footage Became Key Part of Investigation
Authorities later received video footage connected to the incident during a follow-up investigation.
Police said detectives reviewed the clip, which appeared to show Diiorio confronting a Black female neighbor while yelling aggressively.
In the video, he allegedly shouted phrases including “Get the f— out of here” and repeatedly told the woman to leave the area.
The woman was reportedly seen walking away while speaking on the phone and asking nearby people to call the police.
Bias Intimidation Charge Filed
After reviewing the evidence, investigators filed criminal charges against Diiorio.
He was charged with:
- Harassment
- Bias intimidation
According to reports citing the criminal complaint, Diiorio allegedly used the phrase “you people” during the confrontation.
Investigators said he later admitted to authorities that he was referring to Black people when using the phrase.
That statement reportedly became an important factor in the bias intimidation charge.
Suspect Arrested and Released After Court Appearance
Police arrested Diiorio on May 20 and took him to the Burlington County Jail.
During a court appearance on May 21, a judge reportedly ordered him to have no contact with the alleged victim.
He was later released from custody.
Authorities said his next court appearance is scheduled for July.
