A 38-year-old man has died after being attacked by a shark near Rottnest Island off the western coast of Australia.
The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. on Saturday at Horseshoe Reef, located about 19 miles west of Perth.
Shark Attack Details
According to St. John WA Ambulance, the man was in the water when he was believed to have been bitten by a shark. He was brought back to shore but never regained consciousness.
The attack is reported to have involved a great white shark, officials said.
Safety Warnings
Perth’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged the public to exercise additional caution in the area. Footage from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation shows police and rescue teams responding to the scene with boats and emergency equipment.
Context of Recent Shark Attacks
This is the second fatal shark attack in Australia in 2026. In January, a 12-year-old boy died a week after a shark attack in Sydney Harbor. During the same two days, three others were attacked along the New South Wales coast but survived.
Authorities continue to monitor the area and advise swimmers, surfers, and boaters to take extreme care.
