A potential school tragedy was reportedly prevented in Illinois after a relative stopped a teenage boy who authorities say was planning an attack on an elementary school. Police said the boy was detained after a family member discovered he was armed and immediately called 911.
The incident happened in Plainfield Township, southwest of Chicago, and has raised serious concerns about school safety and youth mental health.
Teen Detained Over Alleged Illinois School Shooting Plot
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Department, officers responded to a call on May 22 involving a reportedly suicidal male juvenile.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a teenage boy being restrained by a relative who had allegedly discovered the teen carrying a firearm.
Authorities said the relative pinned the boy down until police arrived.
Investigators later claimed the teenager was allegedly on his way to carry out a shooting at Grand Prairie Elementary School in Joliet.
Police Recover Weapons and Ammunition
During the investigation, deputies reportedly recovered several dangerous items from the teenager’s backpack.
According to authorities, the items included:
- A Glock handgun
- Multiple loaded magazines
- Knives
- Ammunition
- Gloves
- An accelerant and other materials
Officials said the discovery raised immediate concerns about a planned violent attack.
Teen Allegedly Made Suicidal and Homicidal Statements
Authorities stated that the boy allegedly made suicidal and homicidal comments to emergency responders at the scene.
He was later taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
Officials confirmed the teen remains in police custody while the investigation continues.

The Plainfield Community Consolidated School District confirmed the student was a freshman at Plainfield High School-Central Campus.
The district also stated the student had not attended school since December and reportedly had a history of poor attendance.
School officials said there was no active threat to students or staff because the incident happened after early dismissal on the final day of school.
However, schools in the area still implemented safety measures, including:
- Lockdowns for staff still inside buildings
