A strange and almost unbelievable theft case has come out of California, where a man allegedly carried out a clever but illegal trick involving Lego sets and pasta. What seemed like a harmless idea ended up causing big financial losses and serious legal trouble.
What Happened in the Case
Jarrelle Augustine, 28, has been arrested for allegedly carrying out a nationwide theft scheme. The case was handled by the Irvine Police Department.
Police say Augustine was involved in around 70 theft incidents across different states, mainly targeting stores like Target.
How the Scam Worked
According to investigators, the plan was simple but tricky:
- He bought Lego sets from stores
- Took them home and removed the original pieces
- Replaced them with dried pasta
- Returned the boxes to the store for a full refund
Because pasta makes a similar sound when the box is shaken, store staff did not immediately realise the difference.
Scale of the Theft
Authorities say this method caused losses of nearly $34,000. The thefts were not limited to one place. Reports suggest the scam happened in multiple states, including:
- California
- Texas
- Tennessee
- Florida
- New Jersey
This made it a large and organised pattern rather than a one-time act.
How Police Caught Him
Store officials noticed a pattern in the returns and alerted police. After this:
- Surveillance was carried out
- The same suspect was linked to multiple incidents
- Augustine was identified and tracked
Police later arrested him at his apartment.
Evidence Found
During the arrest, officers reportedly found several Lego sets at his home. Many of these were high-value collections, especially popular themes like Star Wars and Marvel, which are known to sell for high prices.
This evidence supported the claim that he was repeatedly using the same method.
Legal Charges and Situation
Augustine has been booked on suspicion of grand theft and is currently in custody. If proven guilty, he could face serious punishment under the law.
Police also used humour while announcing the arrest, joking about the unusual method used in the crime.
