A heartbreaking vacation tragedy involving a woman from New York has taken a major turn after Jamaican police located and detained her husband, who had been named a person of interest in her death. The case has drawn international attention as investigators continue searching for answers about what happened during what was supposed to be a birthday celebration.
Husband of New York Woman Found After International Search
Jamaican authorities have taken Dane Watson into custody in connection with the death of his wife, Melissa Kerry Samnath.
According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Watson was officially taken into custody on May 15 after being handed over by family members.
Police said detectives in St. Mary Parish arrested the 31-year-old before transporting him to St. James Parish, where the investigation is centered.
Victim Died During Birthday Vacation
Authorities said 35-year-old Melissa Samnath died on April 29 shortly after being dropped off at Cornwall Regional Hospital.
Medical officials later determined she died from multiple blunt force injuries to the head.
Investigators said Watson assisted her from a vehicle at the hospital but allegedly left the facility shortly afterward.
Her death immediately triggered a homicide investigation.
Family Helped Arrange Watson’s Surrender
Police officials confirmed Watson surrendered peacefully after family members coordinated with investigators.
Anthony Wallace, commanding officer for the St. Mary police division, said authorities received information that Watson wanted to surrender but feared for his safety.
Police then arranged for him to be safely escorted to a local station, where he was formally handed over without incident.
No Charges Announced Yet
At this stage, Watson has only been named a person of interest.
Authorities have not yet announced:
- Formal criminal charges
- Whether he has retained legal counsel
- Whether additional suspects are being investigated
Police say the investigation remains active.
Evidence Found at Property in Jamaica
Earlier in the investigation, detectives reportedly searched a property in Norwood.
According to investigators, they found:
- The victim’s personal belongings
- Blood evidence inside the property
- Additional materials now being examined for forensic evidence
Authorities believe these discoveries may help reconstruct Samnath’s final hours.
Disturbing Final Message to Family
Reports indicate that shortly before 11 p.m. on the night of her death, Samnath allegedly sent a troubling text message to relatives back in New York.
According to local reports, her final message reportedly said:
“I need you to call the cops… Look at my location.”
The message was reportedly sent just over an hour before her birthday.
Loved Ones Remember Melissa Samnath
A memorial fundraiser created after her death describes Samnath as a loving, strong, and unforgettable woman.
Friends and family said she loved:
- Traveling
- Discovering new places
- Spending time with loved ones
- Creating unforgettable memories
Her death has left relatives searching for answers while mourning an unexpected and tragic loss.
Investigation Continues
Jamaican authorities say detectives are continuing to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and review digital communications as they work to determine exactly what happened.
Watson remains in police custody as investigators move forward.
