Indiana requires seniors to renew driver’s licenses more frequently with in-person visits and vision tests starting at age 75.
Renewal Cycles by Age
Drivers under 75 renew every 6 years and can often do so online or by mail if eligible. Those aged 75-84 renew every 3 years in person at a BMV branch, while drivers 85 and older renew every 2 years, also in person. Fees are reduced for seniors: $11 for ages 75-84 and $7 for 85+, compared to $17.50 standard.
Required Tests and Restrictions
A vision screening (20/40 acuity minimum) is mandatory at every renewal for those 75 and older; online renewal every other cycle is possible with a recent optometrist report submitted via Form 56520.
No knowledge or road tests are required unless the license has been expired over 6 months or complaints/medical issues arise.
Renewal Process Tips
Visit a BMV branch with proof of identity, residency, and SSN; REAL ID compliance needs extra documents. Late renewals over a year may trigger full retesting. Family can request reviews if safety concerns exist, but age alone doesn’t revoke privileges.
