A tragic Mother’s Day incident on Long Island has left one man dead, his mother seriously injured, and multiple police officers treated at a hospital after what authorities describe as a violent domestic emergency. The case is now under investigation as officials work to determine exactly what happened inside the home.
Police Responded to Violent Domestic Call
According to investigators, officers from the Southampton Town Police Department responded shortly before 3 p.m. on May 10 to reports of an escalating domestic situation in Riverhead.
Authorities say the emergency involved a man armed with a knife inside the residence.
When officers arrived, the situation reportedly escalated, ending with police opening fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mother Suffers Serious Stab Wounds
Police say a 62-year-old woman, believed to be the suspect’s mother, was found seriously injured inside the home.
Investigators say the woman, who reportedly uses a wheelchair, suffered multiple stab wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Her current condition has not been publicly updated.
Police Officers Also Treated
During the emergency response, three officers reportedly received medical treatment following the shooting incident.
All three officers were later released from the hospital.
State Investigation Underway
Because the incident involved deadly police force, detectives from the New York State Attorney General’s Office have joined the investigation.
The agency’s Office of Special Investigation is now conducting a preliminary review, which is standard procedure in officer-involved deaths.
The Suffolk County Police Department is also assisting with the investigation.
Neighbors Describe Troubled Household
Neighbors told local media that the family had faced serious personal struggles over the years.
According to reports, the mother had raised triplet sons and had reportedly dealt with ongoing family difficulties after the death of her husband.
Some neighbors also claimed there had been previous concerns involving mental health and domestic problems inside the home.
911 Call May Have Triggered Response
Reports suggest the mother may have called 911 shortly before the violence, telling dispatchers she was afraid of her son.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the contents of that emergency call.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly how the stabbing occurred before police arrived.

The identities of both the deceased man and his injured mother have not yet been publicly released.
