The investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie appears to be making progress, according to Arizona law enforcement. As the case approaches 100 days, the sheriff leading the investigation says authorities are moving closer to finding answers in one of the state’s most closely watched missing persons cases.
Nancy Guthrie is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-host of the Today show, and her disappearance has drawn national attention since she vanished earlier this year.
Sheriff Says Investigators Are Getting Closer
Chris Nanos, sheriff of Pima County, briefly spoke with reporters on May 8 outside the sheriff’s department.
When asked whether investigators were any closer to solving Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, Nanos gave a short but significant response: authorities “are” getting closer.
Though he did not share additional details, the statement has renewed hope for family members and investigators working on the case.
Nancy Guthrie Missing Since January
Nancy Guthrie has been missing since January 31. Investigators believe she was taken against her will from her home in Tucson during the early morning hours of February 1.
Authorities say home surveillance footage captured a masked man outside her front door around the time of her disappearance.
This evidence quickly led investigators to treat the case as a possible kidnapping rather than a voluntary disappearance.
Blood and DNA Evidence Found
During earlier searches, investigators reportedly found blood believed to belong to Nancy Guthrie outside her home.
Authorities also recovered what they described as mixed DNA evidence, which has been undergoing forensic testing as part of the investigation.
Sheriff Nanos previously stated that investigators believe the crime may have been targeted, though officials have not publicly confirmed a motive.
Savannah Guthrie Shares Emotional Message
On Mother’s Day, Savannah Guthrie shared an emotional public message for her missing mother.
The television journalist wrote that her family would never stop searching and would never find peace until Nancy is found.
Her message touched thousands of supporters who continue following the case nationwide.
Major Rewards Offered
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s location or the arrest of those responsible.
The Guthrie family has also announced an additional $1 million reward for information that helps solve the case.
In addition, the family donated $500,000 to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to support missing persons investigations.
