Oklahoma City police are investigating a tragic incident after a vehicle was found submerged in a lake near North County Line Road and South Overholser Drive early Saturday morning. The discovery has raised concerns about safety in the area, particularly following a similar crash earlier this year.
Details of the Incident
Police officers responded to the scene at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday, where they discovered the vehicle submerged in the water. By the time News 9 crews arrived, the vehicle had already been removed.
Tragically, one person was found dead inside the vehicle. Investigators have not yet released the victim’s identity or provided information on what may have caused the vehicle to enter the water.
Local resident Victoria Nejat, who was visiting the lake with her children, initially thought the police presence was related to a previous incident that occurred in April.
Two 22-year-old friends lost their lives when their vehicle drove into the lake, and Nejat feared another similar tragedy had occurred. Unfortunately, it was another case of the same nature, with a vehicle veering off the road and entering the lake.
Community Concerns and Suggestions for Improved Safety
In the wake of this tragedy, local residents have expressed concerns about the safety of the area, especially at night. Toby Gouge, another local who was visiting the lake on Saturday morning, suggested that additional patrols or safety measures such as barriers or a closing time for the lake could help prevent future incidents. He also emphasized the lack of lighting in the area, which he believes contributes to the danger after dark.
Nejat echoed these concerns, suggesting that more flashing warning signs and barriers similar to those found on highways could help improve safety and potentially save lives.
Since the fatal crash in April, a reflective sign with an arrow has been added to the area. However, it remains unclear whether the city of Oklahoma City plans to implement additional safety measures.
Ongoing Investigation
The Oklahoma City Police Department’s Fatality Investigation Team has responded to the scene and is currently investigating the cause of Saturday’s crash. Authorities have not released any details regarding whether additional vehicles or people were involved in the incident.
The investigation is still ongoing, and officials have not disclosed further information at this time. The community remains concerned about the safety of the area, with many residents urging the city to consider further protective measures to prevent future tragedies.

With a recent similar incident and calls from the community for increased safety measures, it is clear that more attention is needed to ensure the safety of visitors to the lake, especially at night.
