A Florida woman has been accused of luring a man she met on Instagram to her luxury Miami condominium before allegedly robbing him with the help of two other women.
Police say the victim believed he was going on a casual meeting for drinks, but the situation quickly turned violent once he entered the apartment. The shocking case has now led to serious criminal charges and renewed concerns about crimes linked to online meetups.
Florida Woman Arrested in Instagram Robbery Case
Authorities identified the accused as 30-year-old Nicole Cano.
According to Miami police, Cano faces charges of:
- False imprisonment
- Strong-arm robbery
The incident reportedly took place on April 11 at the Paraiso Bayviews condominium complex located on NE 31st Street in Miami, Florida.
Victim Met Suspect Through Instagram
Police said Cano and the victim had previously connected through Instagram before arranging to meet in person.
According to the criminal complaint, Cano contacted the man around noon on the day of the incident. The pair exchanged several messages before agreeing to meet later that afternoon for drinks at her condo.
At approximately 6:15 p.m., the victim arrived at the building, where Cano allegedly met him downstairs and escorted him to the apartment.
Two Women Allegedly Emerged From Bedroom
Investigators said the situation changed moments after the victim entered the condo.
While the man was reportedly admiring the balcony view, two unidentified women allegedly came out from a bedroom inside the apartment.
Police claim all three women then demanded money from the victim.
According to the complaint, the man repeatedly told them he did not have any cash.
Victim Allegedly Prevented From Leaving
Authorities said the women stopped the victim from leaving the apartment after he tried to escape.
Police reported that a struggle broke out near the door as the victim attempted to get out of the condo.
During the altercation, investigators say the women shouted that he was “going to pay.”
Gold Pendant Reportedly Stolen
According to police, the victim wore a chain around his neck during the incident.
While he managed to keep possession of the chain itself, authorities said the women allegedly ripped off a gold cross pendant attached to it.
Police estimated the value of the pendant at around $300.
Victim Escaped While Calling for Help
Investigators said the man eventually managed to open the apartment door and flee the condo while screaming for help.
After escaping, he contacted law enforcement and reported the alleged robbery.
Police later launched an investigation into the incident.
Victim Identified Suspect in Photo Lineup
On May 1, detectives reportedly showed the victim a six-photo lineup.
According to police, the man positively identified Nicole Cano as one of the women involved in the incident.
A few days later, on May 4, officers arrested Cano at the condominium complex.
Suspect Denied Involvement During Questioning
Police said Cano was informed of her legal rights and agreed to speak with investigators without an attorney present.
During recorded questioning, authorities claim Cano admitted arranging the meeting with the victim but denied taking part in the robbery or preventing him from leaving the apartment.
Despite her denial, police proceeded with her arrest.
Court Orders Suspect to Avoid Victim
Cano was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where she remains in custody.
Court records show she later entered a not guilty plea and was assigned a public defender.
A judge has also ordered her to stay away from the alleged victim while the case moves forward.
No future court hearings had been scheduled at the time reports were published.
Online Meetups Raise Safety Concerns
The case has once again highlighted the risks connected to meeting strangers through social media platforms. Law enforcement agencies often advise people to use caution when arranging private meetings with individuals known only online.
Experts recommend:
| Safety Tip | Reason |
|---|---|
| Meet in public places first | Reduces personal risk |
| Inform friends or family | Helps others know your location |
| Avoid isolated locations | Increases personal safety |
| Trust warning signs | Helps avoid dangerous situations |
As the investigation continues, police are still working to identify the two other women allegedly involved in the incident.
