A tragic shooting outside an Ohio Dunkin’ Donuts has ended with a lengthy prison sentence for the accused gunman. The case began after a late-night argument between two men escalated into deadly violence in Garfield Heights, Ohio.
Prosecutors said the victim tried to escape the confrontation, but he was chased down and shot near the restaurant. The heartbreaking incident left a young family without a husband and father.
Ohio Man Sentenced in Deadly Dunkin’ Donuts Shooting
Thirty-year-old Waunyae Arrington has been sentenced to at least 28 years in prison for the death of 32-year-old Jose Ervin Jr.
According to reports, Arrington pleaded guilty in March 2026 to:
- Involuntary manslaughter
- Felonious assault
- Having weapons while under disability
The sentencing took place in Cuyahoga County on Tuesday.
Argument Turned Deadly Outside Gas Station
The shooting happened on October 4, 2024, in Garfield Heights, a city located southeast of Cleveland, Ohio.
Police said Jose Ervin Jr. was at a gas station with a woman after leaving a nearby bar. Arrington was also at the location, and an argument reportedly broke out between the two men.
Surveillance footage later showed several women trying to stop the fight before the situation became violent.
Victim Tried to Escape
According to investigators, Arrington reached into a bag and pulled out a gun during the argument.
Fearing for his life, Ervin ran across the street toward a Dunkin’ Donuts located on Turney Road.
However, prosecutors said Arrington fired multiple shots while chasing him.
During the chase, Ervin reportedly tripped and was struck by one of the bullets.
Police Found Victim Unresponsive
Officers responded to the area around 2:45 a.m. after reports of gunfire.
When police arrived, they found Ervin lying unresponsive on the ground near the Dunkin’ Donuts.
Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors later pronounced him dead.
The shooting shocked local residents and quickly became a major investigation for Garfield Heights police.
Suspect Arrested Days Later
Authorities arrested Arrington four days after the shooting.
He was booked into the Cuyahoga County Jail and later faced several serious criminal charges connected to the killing.
By pleading guilty in 2026, Arrington avoided going to trial but still received a lengthy prison sentence for his actions.
Victim Remembered as Family Man
Jose Ervin Jr.’s death deeply affected his family and loved ones.
Reports stated that he was a father of twins and shared the same birthday as both his wife and children, making the tragedy even more emotional for those close to him.
Friends and relatives remembered him as a caring father whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
Gun Violence Continues to Raise Concerns
The case has once again highlighted growing concerns about gun violence and how quickly public arguments can become deadly. What began as a disagreement outside a gas station ended with a man losing his life and another facing decades behind bars.
Authorities continue to urge people to walk away from heated confrontations rather than turning to violence. Families on both sides of the tragedy are now left dealing with the long-term consequences of one deadly moment.
