A Florida woman contacted police after an online relationship she started through Instagram allegedly turned dangerous within weeks. Authorities say a Pennsylvania man became obsessive, jealous, and threatening after the woman tried to end their long-distance relationship. The case has now led to multiple criminal charges, including threats to kill and sexual cyber harassment.
Pennsylvania Man Arrested After Alleged Instagram Threats
Police identified the accused as 29-year-old Hector Manuel Cruz. He is currently being held in Girard, Pennsylvania, after authorities in Winter Haven, Florida, issued a warrant for his arrest.
According to the Winter Haven Public Safety Department, the woman first contacted police on April 27 after receiving repeated threatening phone calls from Cruz.
Investigators said the pair met on Instagram about a month earlier and soon began a flirtatious online relationship.
Relationship Became Aggressive and Controlling
Police said the woman described the relationship as romantic in the beginning. The two reportedly exchanged text messages, personal conversations, and nude photos while staying in touch daily.
However, authorities said Cruz’s behaviour soon changed.
According to police, Cruz became jealous and angry whenever the woman did not respond quickly to his messages. He allegedly accused her of talking to other men and frequently entered what investigators described as “jealous rages.”
Police said Cruz allegedly threatened the woman by telling her:
- “I hate cheaters”
- “If you cheat on me, I’ll shoot you”
Nude Photos Allegedly Sent to Victim’s Boss
Investigators said Cruz knew where the woman worked and later used personal photos to harass her.
According to police, he allegedly sent the woman’s nude photos to her supervisor. Authorities also claimed he sent threatening and abusive messages to the supervisor and even threatened to harm the supervisor and her husband.
The woman told officers she ended the relationship after about a month because of Cruz’s aggressive behaviour.
Threats Continued After Breakup
Even after the relationship ended, police said Cruz allegedly continued harassing the woman using multiple phone numbers and social media accounts.
Authorities claim he repeatedly threatened to kill her and later told her he planned to travel to Florida.
The woman then contacted law enforcement for help.
Police Tracked Suspect Across States
Investigators connected Cruz to addresses in both Pennsylvania and Connecticut while searching for him.
Officers from the Girard Borough Police Department later located and arrested him in Pennsylvania.
The Winter Haven Public Safety Department confirmed that Cruz will be extradited to Florida to face charges.
Charges Filed Against Hector Manuel Cruz
Authorities charged Cruz with several offences, including:
| Charge | Details |

| Written threats to kill | Allegedly threatening the victim’s life |
| Misuse of a 2-way communication device | Using phones or online platforms for harassment |
| Sexual cyber harassment | Sharing intimate images without consent |
| Harassing phone calls | Repeated threatening communication |
Police have not yet announced his next court appearance.
Growing Concerns Over Online Relationship Safety
This case has once again raised concerns about the risks linked to online relationships and digital harassment. Experts often warn people to be cautious when sharing personal information or intimate content online, especially with someone they have never met in person.
Law enforcement agencies continue to encourage victims of online harassment or threats to report incidents immediately, especially when behaviour becomes controlling, obsessive, or violent.
The Florida woman’s decision to contact police may have prevented the situation from becoming even more dangerous. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as Cruz prepares to face legal proceedings in Florida.
