A tragic shooting inside a group home in Arizona has ended with a 38-year-old man receiving a lengthy prison sentence after a jury rejected his self-defense claim.
The case shocked residents of Phoenix after what began as an argument between roommates turned into a deadly act of violence inside a home meant to provide safety and support. Now, more than two years after the shooting, the victim’s family has finally seen justice served.
Arizona Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Roommate’s Murder
Michael Lanunziata, 38, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of second-degree murder in the killing of his roommate, Joseph Lephiew.
The sentence was handed down on Monday following a jury trial in Maricopa County, Arizona.
According to prosecutors, Lanunziata and Lephiew were living together in a transitional group home in Phoenix along with five other residents when the deadly incident took place.
Deadly Shooting Inside Phoenix Group Home
The shooting happened on January 25, 2024, when Phoenix police received reports of gunfire at the group home.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a chaotic situation unfolding.
Authorities said Lanunziata jumped out of a window and climbed onto the roof of the home before officers could reach him.
While first responders communicated with him from outside, officers entered the home to investigate.
Inside, they found Joseph Lephiew lying on a staircase with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators also recovered Lanunziata’s handgun and multiple shell casings near the victim.
Witnesses Heard Argument Before Gunfire
Other residents living in the home told investigators they heard Lanunziata and Lephiew arguing shortly before the gunshots rang out.
Their statements became an important part of the investigation and helped prosecutors build the timeline of events.
According to authorities, Lephiew was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
Self-Defense Claim Rejected by Jury
After his arrest, Lanunziata told police he acted in self-defense, claiming that Lephiew had “come at him.”
However, investigators said his version of events changed multiple times during questioning.
Prosecutors argued that his statements were inconsistent and did not match the physical evidence collected at the crime scene.
During the trial, prosecutors told the jury that Lanunziata had tried to create a false story to justify the shooting.
After reviewing the evidence, jurors rejected the self-defense argument and found him guilty of second-degree murder.
Prosecutors Call Shooting ‘Unjustified’
Maricopa County prosecutors described the killing as a completely unnecessary act of violence.
Officials said the group home was meant to be a safe place for vulnerable individuals working toward stability and recovery.
Instead, it became the scene of a deadly crime that permanently changed multiple lives.
Previous Deadly Shooting Also Raised Questions
Court documents revealed that this was not the first time Lanunziata claimed self-defense after a fatal shooting.
According to reports from local media, prosecutors presented information about a 2016 incident in Henderson, Nevada, where Lanunziata allegedly shot and killed another housemate, Lamar Reid Jr.
In that case, Lanunziata also claimed he acted in self-defense.
However, those charges were eventually dropped, and no conviction followed.
Prosecutors reportedly used that history during sentencing to argue for a tougher punishment in the Arizona case.
Justice Finally Served
With the 20-year sentence now officially handed down, Michael Lanunziata will spend the next two decades behind bars.
For the family of Joseph Lephiew, the court’s decision brings some measure of justice, though it cannot undo the pain caused by his sudden and violent death.
