EDMOND, Okla. – What was supposed to be a fun and lively gathering at Arcadia Lake quickly turned into a scene of panic and fear as gunshots rang out, injuring dozens and leaving the community in shock.
The Turn from Celebration to Chaos
The party, which had been promoted on social media, attracted around 200 people. However, what started as a carefree gathering soon escalated into a nightmare. Jeremiah Braxton, a partygoer, described the terrifying moment when shots began to fire from multiple directions.
“I don’t know where shots are coming from. It was like 25 shots coming from different areas,” Braxton said.
Within seconds, the atmosphere shifted from celebration to complete chaos, with people fleeing in all directions to escape the gunfire. Braxton recalled the harrowing experience:
“All I could hear was screaming and crying,” Braxton said. “Once I heard shots, I tried to find my people, but I couldn’t. So, I just ran, and I ended up running, and I couldn’t see nothing, I fell into the lake.”
The Cause of the Gunfire
According to Braxton, the shooting began after an altercation involving women, which quickly escalated as family members and friends got involved. The situation soon spiraled out of control, leading to a devastating series of gunshots.
“It started off with girls, and the people’s brothers got involved, shooting, and it was just too much,” Braxton explained.
Edmond police confirmed that 23 people were injured in the incident, with some suffering gunshot wounds.
Survivor Accounts of the Incident
Michael Triplet, another partygoer, shared his own terrifying experience. While trying to flee, he was grazed by a bullet but chose not to seek medical attention immediately.
“I didn’t go to the hospital because it just grazed me like it was a piece of metal stuck. But I put it out in. I had the medics take it, and they just wrapped it up for me,” Triplet said.
Meanwhile, Azia Cato, Braxton’s cousin, was on her way to the party when she heard about the shooting. She feared for the safety of her loved ones, expressing concern over whether they had made it out unharmed.
“I just really hope I don’t lose nobody close to me. I’ve already lost too many people. I don’t want to lose nobody else,” Cato said.
Casualties and Hospitalization
Though police have not confirmed any fatalities at this time, Braxton reported that a close friend passed away shortly after the incident, and another is in critical condition.
“One passed away this morning, sadly, and one is in critical condition,” Braxton said.
Several hospitals across the metro area treated victims of the mass shooting. Integris Health confirmed that they treated 13 people, with seven still hospitalized and three in critical condition. Additionally, OU Health treated five victims from the shooting.
A Call for Change
As the community begins to process the events of that fateful night, many survivors are calling for a change. Michael Triplet shared his perspective on the incident, stating that guns are not the solution to conflicts.
“Guns ain’t the way like, you see what happened tonight, almost 20 people were shot. It’s just awful. I just feel like everybody needs to leave the guns at home,” Triplet said.
