A disturbing domestic violence case in New York has led to serious criminal charges after a man allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and brutally stabbed her adult son while the family was asleep.
Prosecutors say the violent early-morning attack happened just one day after the suspect’s relationship ended, raising fresh concerns about how domestic violence can escalate even after a breakup.
New York Man Indicted in Violent Home Stabbing
Authorities have charged 42-year-old Robert Schreiber in connection with the violent attack.
According to Raymond A. Tierney, Schreiber has been indicted on multiple felony charges.
The charges include:
- Attempted murder
- Burglary
- Attempted assault
- Assault
- Criminal possession of a weapon
- Child endangerment
- Harassment
If convicted on the most serious charges, Schreiber could face up to 25 years in prison.
Breakup Allegedly Triggered Violent Attack
According to prosecutors, Schreiber’s long-term girlfriend ended their relationship on April 17.
Authorities say she locked him out of her home in Patchogue after the breakup.
However, investigators allege that the following morning, Schreiber returned to the home and entered through an unlocked window at around 8 a.m. while the family was asleep.
Victim Allegedly Attacked in His Bedroom
Prosecutors say Schreiber allegedly went directly to the bedroom of his ex-girlfriend’s 22-year-old son.
According to investigators, he allegedly:
- Kicked open the bedroom door
- Attacked the victim while he was inside
- Stabbed him seven times
- Targeted the victim’s head, neck, and shoulder
Authorities say the attack could have turned deadly if family members had not quickly stepped in.
Family Intervention Helped Save Victim
Investigators say relatives inside the home heard the attack and immediately rushed to help.
Family members reportedly:
- Interrupted the attack
- Called emergency services
- Helped the victim escape downstairs
Their quick actions may have saved the young man’s life.
Victim Hospitalized With Serious Injuries
After officers arrived, the victim was rushed by ambulance to NYU Langone Hospital.
Authorities say doctors treated him for multiple stab wounds and used numerous staples to close his injuries.
Officials have not publicly released his identity.
Police Found Weapon on Suspect
Law enforcement officers arrested Schreiber at the scene.
Investigators say the knife believed to have been used in the attack was allegedly found in his possession.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office described the incident as an extremely violent home invasion.
Prosecutors Warn About Domestic Violence After Breakups
District Attorney Raymond Tierney said the case highlights how domestic violence can continue even after a relationship ends.
He called the incident a brutal attack on a young man inside his own home and promised aggressive prosecution.
Suspect Held on $1 Million Bond
According to court records, Robert Schreiber is currently being held on:
- $1,000,000 bond
He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 28.
As the criminal case moves forward, the victim and his family continue recovering from a terrifying act of violence that prosecutors say could have ended in tragedy.
