A heartbreaking murder case in Florida has shocked the local community after a young man was arrested for allegedly shooting a store manager to death following what appeared to be a normal conversation.
Police say 20-year-old Landen Ballard is now facing first-degree murder charges after investigators uncovered surveillance footage, witness statements, and physical evidence connected to the deadly shooting.
The victim, 35-year-old Lanessa Rodriguez, was remembered by friends and family as a kind and caring person whose sudden death has left many devastated.
Florida Man Arrested in Store Manager’s Killing
Authorities confirmed that Landen Ballard is being held at the St. Lucie County Jail without bond.
He has been charged with:
- First-degree murder
- Tampering with evidence
Investigators say Ballard allegedly entered a We Buy Gold store in Fort Pierce on April 28 and shot Rodriguez multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Casual Conversation Turned Deadly
According to investigators, surveillance footage showed Ballard sitting across from Rodriguez inside the store.
Police say the two appeared comfortable with each other and engaged in casual conversation for several minutes, suggesting they may have known one another previously.
During the conversation, investigators say Ballard appeared nervous, repeatedly checking his phone and bouncing his leg.
Police allege that without warning, he pulled out a black handgun that was out of Rodriguez’s sight.
Victim Was Shot Multiple Times
Investigators say Ballard allegedly fired the first shot, striking Rodriguez in the shoulder.
As she attempted to stand, police say he fired multiple additional shots into her chest before emptying the magazine.
After Ballard fled, surveillance footage reportedly captured Rodriguez trying to reach a phone in her final moments to call for help.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found:
- Multiple shell casings
- Bullet holes inside the store
- Rodriguez lying behind her desk in a pool of blood
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witness Helped Police Build the Case
Later that night, one of the individuals who had been with Ballard reportedly contacted police in Vero Beach.
According to investigators, the woman told police she drove Ballard and another man to the store because Ballard claimed he wanted to sell a gold pendant.
She reportedly remained in the car while Ballard entered the store.
After he returned, she told investigators Ballard allegedly admitted to shooting Rodriguez and made a chilling statement.
According to police, he allegedly asked:
“Is it bad that I have no remorse?”
Gun Allegedly Thrown From Vehicle
The witness also told police that Ballard allegedly threw the murder weapon and magazine from the passenger-side window while they were driving.
Investigators later recovered a 9mm handgun on the roadside.
Police believe this weapon was used in the shooting.
Suspect Allegedly Planned to Return and Rob Store
According to investigators, Ballard allegedly planned to return to the store after the shooting to commit a robbery.
The witness claimed Ballard threatened her, telling her to cooperate or she could be killed and abandoned in the woods.
However, after returning near the store and noticing police activity, the group reportedly left the area.
The woman later went directly to law enforcement.
Police Arrested Ballard Before He Could Leave the State
During a later phone call monitored by police, investigators say Ballard again showed no remorse and mentioned he was at his parents’ home preparing to leave for New York.
Officers quickly located him at his parents’ house and placed him under arrest.
He remains in custody without bond.
