Two inmates at the Mack Alford Correctional Center in Atoka County, Oklahoma have been charged with second-degree murder and conspiracy in the death of a fellow inmate, Christopher Smith. Darrell Melton Jr. (45) and John Purdy (33) are facing felony charges following a deadly incident that occurred on March 31, inside the correctional facility.

According to investigators, the incident began when Purdy and Melton requested prison staff’s help to identify who had stolen a tablet from their cell. Details of the Assault
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) report indicates that Purdy was seen on video pushing Smith down a staircase, with Melton following shortly behind. The assault then continued in an area not covered by security cameras. According to an affidavit, Melton admitted to investigators that Purdy struck Smith in the face, pushed him down the stairs, and dragged him toward their cell.
The medical examiner’s report showed that Smith suffered broken ribs, head trauma, and extensive bruising. Despite attempts by prison staff to save his life, Smith was pronounced dead approximately 40 minutes later.
