A deeply disturbing murder case from Syracuse, New York, has shocked people not only because of the victims involved, but also because of the accused man’s behaviour in court. David Huff Pleads Guilty to Killing Son and Girlfriend
David Huff pleaded guilty on Tuesday, April 28, to two counts of murder. The victims were his 11-year-old son, Jeremiah Huff, and his 32-year-old girlfriend, Yeraldith Tschudy. The killings happened in Syracuse, New York, in March 2025.
Onondaga County Assistant District Attorney Robert Moran confirmed the guilty plea. David is now expected to be sentenced on May 29. He will receive 20 years to life for each murder, and the sentences will be served one after another.
What Happened on March 17, 2025
According to authorities, David Huff repeatedly shot his son Jeremiah on March 17, 2025. Jeremiah died from a gunshot wound to the head.
One of the most heartbreaking details of the case is that Jeremiah was still alive long enough to call his mother after being shot.
His mother then called 911 while her son was dying on the phone. Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick later said that listening to her son being murdered is something she will never recover from.
Yeraldith Tschudy, who had been dating David for about six months, was also shot. Authorities said she was shot so many times that they initially had difficulty identifying her.
Gun Allegedly Malfunctioned During Another Attack
The case also involved David Huff’s stepfather, Charles O’Donnel. Prosecutors said David allegedly pulled a gun on him and fired, but the weapon malfunctioned. Because of that, O’Donnel survived.
This allegation was discussed in court in May 2025 by Assistant District Attorney Robert Moran.
Smirking and Laughing in Court
During his court appearance, David’s behaviour drew strong attention. Courtroom footage streamed online reportedly showed him smirking, smiling, and shaking his head while the judge read the charges.
At one point, the judge asked him whether he found the matter funny. David reportedly shook his head while laughing and said that a joke was stuck in his head. He then told the judge to continue.
He kept laughing to himself during parts of the hearing. At times, he also raised his eyebrows in an exaggerated way and nodded his head while the proceedings continued.
Robert Moran later said that he was not focused on David’s reaction. He said his attention was on Jeremiah and Yeraldith, and that he “could not care less” about David’s courtroom behaviour.

Who Was Yeraldith Tschudy?
Yeraldith Tschudy was a 32-year-old social worker and a mother of two children, aged 4 and 11. She worked at a facility that helped people dealing with addiction and mental health struggles.
Her obituary described her as someone who cared deeply about children and wanted to make a difference in their lives. Her death has left behind grieving family members, friends, co-workers, and her two children.
Who Was Jeremiah Huff?
Jeremiah Huff was an 11-year-old sixth-grader. His loved ones remembered him as a curious and joyful child. According to a GoFundMe created to support his mother, Jeremiah enjoyed finding unique rocks during his adventures.
His obituary said his curiosity about the world and people made him a joy to be around. After his death, his mother shared that Jeremiah loved his father, which makes the case even more painful.
Motive Still Unclear
Authorities have not clearly explained what led David Huff to kill Jeremiah and Yeraldith. Even after his guilty plea, the reason behind the murders remains unclear.
At sentencing, David’s remaining charges of attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon will be dropped. He had pleaded not guilty to those charges earlier, but they will no longer move forward as part of the legal outcome.
