A jury trial has begun for a 22-year-old man accused in a deadly 2024 shooting near Lake Fayetteville, a case that left one person dead and several others injured.
Gilberto Gordillo of Springdale is facing one count of capital murder and four counts of attempted capital murder. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Charges and Court Developments
Gordillo has been in custody at the Washington County Detention Center since Feb. 21, 2024.
In March 2026, prosecutors filed an amended felony information sheet that removed terms such as “premeditated” and “deliberated,” which had appeared in earlier filings.
At the same time, the prosecutor’s office formally waived the death penalty, meaning the case will proceed without capital punishment as a sentencing option.
Victim and Injuries
The shooting resulted in the death of 18-year-old Christian Alexander Rodriguez-Barroso.
According to the Fayetteville Police Department, at least four other people were injured during the incident.
What Happened at Lake Fayetteville
The shooting took place on Feb. 15, 2024, near the Lake Fayetteville Environmental Studies Center, at the intersection of Lake Road and Powell Street.
Police say a large group of people and vehicles had gathered near the lake, reportedly for a fight. During the confrontation:
- People began running back to their cars
- Gunfire broke out as the crowd dispersed
Investigators say video footage captured the chaotic scene as shots were fired.
Witness Accounts and Evidence
Witnesses told police they saw Gordillo with what was described as an “AR-15 style rifle” before the shooting.
Two witnesses reportedly claimed they saw him firing the weapon at vehicles as people attempted to leave the area.
These accounts form a key part of the prosecution’s case as the trial moves forward.
Other Suspects in the Case
Gordillo was one of four people arrested in connection with the shooting.
The other individuals include:
- Alberto Esteban-Cruz
- Pablo Garcia
- Jose Casillas
Casillas has already pleaded guilty to charges including terroristic threatening, aggravated assault, and battery. He was sentenced to six years in prison.
