A tragic incident in Wister has left one law enforcement officer dead and another injured following a standoff that unfolded on Sunday.
According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the situation began around 11 a.m. on April 19 when deputies from the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check at a residence along Highway 270.
Gunfire Erupts During Welfare Check
Authorities said that when officers arrived at the home, a man identified as Edgar Lara, 36, immediately opened fire on law enforcement. Officers returned fire, leading to a tense and dangerous exchange.
The suspect then barricaded himself inside the home, continuing to fire shots and forcing officers into a prolonged standoff that lasted several hours.
Hours-Long Standoff Ends in Surrender
The standoff continued until approximately 4 p.m., when Lara eventually surrendered to authorities. He was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries before being booked into jail.
Officials confirmed that charges against Lara are still pending as the investigation continues.
Officer Killed, Another Hospitalized
During the exchange of gunfire, a deputy from the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office and an officer from the Wister Police Department were both struck.
Authorities later confirmed that the deputy died from injuries sustained in the shooting. The Wister police officer was hospitalized and is currently reported to be in stable condition.
