A shocking incident in Lexington, Kentucky, has raised serious concerns about drunk driving and public safety. A young woman allegedly drove her car into a group of people during a night out, leaving several injured. The case has now moved forward in court, with new details coming out about what exactly happened that night.
What Happened in the Parking Lot
The incident took place in the early morning hours of March 22 in a parking lot near Short and Mill streets in downtown Lexington. According to police reports, a group of people had gathered in the area when a black car suddenly drove over a curb and into the crowd.
A police officer who was nearby said she heard a noise and quickly noticed the situation. Several injured people approached officers, complaining about injuries to their heads and legs. One person even had serious injuries that could lead to paralysis.
A video of the incident shows a tense moment where people surrounded the car. The driver then reversed the vehicle and suddenly accelerated forward, hitting at least two individuals and knocking them to the ground before speeding away.
Driver Allegedly Going the Wrong Way
After hitting the crowd, the car continued driving down a busy street. Authorities later confirmed that it was a one-way road, and the driver was going in the wrong direction, which made the situation even more dangerous.
The driver was later identified as 20-year-old Kaydence Carpenter. Police arrested her soon after the incident.
Charges Filed Against the Accused
Carpenter now faces several serious charges. These include:
- Driving under the influence (DUI)
- Reckless driving
- Second-degree assault
Police officers claimed that she showed clear signs of being drunk at the time of her arrest. They reported that she smelled strongly of alcohol and had slurred speech. Officers also said they found a fake ID in her car.
Behaviour After the Incident
During court testimony, an officer described Carpenter’s behaviour as unusual and concerning. She reportedly showed poor judgment and seemed uninhibited. At one point, she even began dancing while someone was recording her.
This behaviour was presented in court as part of the evidence suggesting that she was under the influence and not in full control of her actions.
Defence Raises Questions
Carpenter’s lawyer, however, presented a different version of events. According to the defence, Carpenter may have been acting out of fear. The lawyer claimed that she was surrounded by a group of people and was even punched.
He also mentioned that one person in the crowd appeared to have a gun. The defence argued that the officer who testified did not witness these earlier moments and only saw what happened when the car moved toward the crowd.
This raises questions about whether Carpenter was trying to escape a threatening situation or if her actions were purely reckless due to intoxication.
