A disturbing case from Utah has shocked many people, as a man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of his own mother and her friend. Police believe both victims are dead, and the investigation has revealed some deeply troubling details about what may have happened.
Missing Persons Case Turns Suspicious
The case began on March 26 when 28-year-old Matthew Leonard reported his mother, Sarah Johnson, missing. She was last seen on March 20 at her home in Springville, Utah. At the same time, 50-year-old John Handricks was also reported missing from Salt Lake City.
As police started investigating, they discovered that both Johnson and Handricks were last seen together at Johnson’s house on the same night. This raised serious concerns, especially after witnesses shared important information.
Police Suspect Double Murder
After searching the home and speaking to witnesses, police began to suspect that something violent had taken place. Some witnesses claimed they heard sounds similar to gunshots coming from inside the house on the night the two were last seen.
Based on early findings, authorities said it was possible that both Johnson and Handricks had been shot and killed.
Suspicious Behaviour Before Disappearance
Court records revealed that Matthew Leonard had already been on police radar before the disappearance. On March 9, he was arrested for harassment after sending multiple unwanted messages and calls to his girlfriend within a short time.
Despite being told to stop, he reportedly sent 11 messages and made 11 calls within just 90 minutes. Some of these messages included threats to harm himself. In the days that followed, his behaviour became increasingly paranoid.
Due to this, his girlfriend filed for a protective order against him on March 13.
Timeline Raises Questions
On March 23, John Handricks was officially reported missing. The person who filed the report mentioned that he was last seen with Sarah Johnson on March 20.
Just a few days later, on March 26, police questioned Leonard about Handricks. On the same day, Leonard officially reported his mother missing, which raised further suspicion.
Evidence Found Inside the Home
The investigation took a serious turn when detectives searched the Springville house on April 11. Inside, they found strong evidence suggesting a violent crime had taken place.
Key findings included:
- Blood stains found in multiple areas of the house
- Shell casings and a bullet slug
- Blood trapped between the grooves of the bedroom flooring
- Large pools of blood against walls
Police also noticed signs that someone had tried to clean up the scene. Based on the evidence, investigators believe that both victims were killed inside the home and that their bodies were later removed.
Arrest and Charges
Matthew Leonard was arrested on April 11 and is currently being held without bail at the Utah County Jail. Authorities are preparing to charge him with two counts of aggravated murder.
In addition to this, he is also facing several other charges, including:
- Drug possession and intent to distribute
- Possession of drug-related items
- Illegal weapon possession
- Obstruction of justice
Prosecutors have requested more time to gather full evidence before formally filing all charges.
Ongoing Investigation
So far, the bodies of Sarah Johnson and John Handricks have not been found. However, police strongly believe they are no longer alive based on the evidence collected.
The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more details to build a strong case.
