A shocking medical case from Florida has raised serious concerns about patient safety after a doctor was accused of making a fatal mistake during surgery. The incident has led to criminal charges and an ongoing legal case.
What Happened in the Case
In August 2024, 70-year-old William Bryan went to the hospital due to severe abdominal pain while visiting Florida with his wife, Beverly Bryan.
Doctors decided to perform a surgery to remove his spleen (a procedure called splenectomy). However, during the operation, something went terribly wrong.
According to authorities, the doctor allegedly removed the patient’s liver instead of the spleen. This mistake caused massive blood loss, and sadly, William Bryan died on the operating table.
Doctor Charged After Investigation
After a detailed investigation by law enforcement and medical authorities, a grand jury found enough evidence to charge Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky.
He has been charged with:
- Second-degree manslaughter
Officials stated that the actions during surgery were serious enough to be considered criminal under law.
Hospital and Authorities’ Response
Authorities said that the investigation was carried out carefully and based on facts.
The local sheriff confirmed that the case would proceed through the legal system properly. He also expressed sympathy for the victim’s family.
The hospital where the surgery took place stated that:
- Patient safety is their top priority
- They are conducting their own internal investigation
- They cannot comment in detail due to legal reasons
Family’s Allegation
The victim’s wife, Beverly Bryan, has claimed that the doctor’s mistake directly caused her husband’s death.
Her legal team had earlier shared medical documents supporting the claim that the wrong organ was removed.
Legal Status of the Case
Dr. Shaknovsky has been:
- Arrested and taken into custody
- Charged with manslaughter
- Sent to Walton County Jail
The case will now move forward in court, where evidence will be examined in detail.
