A heartbreaking incident from South Carolina has left a family in deep grief after a toddler lost his life in a tragic road accident. The case has raised serious concerns about road safety, supervision of young children, and the dangers of driving under the influence.
What Happened in the Incident
The accident took place on April 13 near a restaurant called El Latino Bar and Grill. Around 8:15 pm, police received a call about a pedestrian crash.
When emergency teams reached the spot, they found a small child with critical injuries. The child was immediately taken to the hospital, but sadly, he could not survive.
The victim was identified as 14-month-old Christopher Rodrigo Perez Tapia. Reports confirmed that he died due to multiple serious injuries caused by the accident.
How the Accident Occurred
According to investigators, the child’s parents were cleaning their restaurant after closing time. During that moment, the father stepped outside to throw garbage and did not realise that the toddler had followed him.
In just a few seconds, the child wandered onto the road. At the same time, a truck driven by 62-year-old David Ronald Metz hit the child.
Witnesses said everything happened very quickly, leaving almost no time to react.
Driver’s Condition and Arrest
Authorities found that the driver was allegedly under the influence at the time of the accident. This played a major role in the case.
Officials believe that if the driver had not been intoxicated, he might have reacted faster and possibly avoided hitting the child.
After the collision, the driver initially continued driving but later returned to the scene.
He was taken into custody and charged with a serious offence related to driving under the influence causing death.
Legal Action and Charges
David Ronald Metz has been charged with:
- DUI (Driving Under the Influence) involving death
- A felony offence due to the fatal outcome
During a court hearing, the judge set his bail and added strict conditions, including:
- Wearing a GPS tracking device if released
- Not contacting the victim’s family
- Not returning to the location of the incident
The case is still under investigation, and more details may come out in court.
