A shocking medical case from Florida has raised serious concerns about patient safety and accountability in healthcare. A former surgeon is now facing criminal charges after a surgery reportedly went terribly wrong, leading to the death of a patient.
What Happened During the Surgery?
According to authorities, Thomas Shaknovsky was supposed to perform a routine procedure called a laparoscopic splenectomy. This is a minimally invasive surgery where doctors remove the spleen.
However, during the operation, he allegedly removed the patient’s liver instead. The patient, Bill Bryan, was 70 years old and had travelled from Muscle Shoals for treatment.
Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital was the facility where the surgery took place in 2024.
Doctors say this mistake caused severe internal bleeding, leading to Bryan’s death on the operating table.
Legal Action Against the Surgeon
A grand jury in Walton County reviewed the case and decided to indict the surgeon. He has now been charged with second-degree manslaughter, which is a serious criminal offence.
If found guilty, Shaknovsky could face up to 15 years in prison.
Michael Adkinson said officials are committed to ensuring justice is served and that the case will go through the proper legal process.
Previous Medical Mistakes
This is not the first time Shaknovsky has been accused of making serious surgical errors.
In 2023, he reportedly removed part of a patient’s pancreas instead of the adrenal gland. When questioned, he allegedly claimed that the adrenal gland had “moved” within the body, which medical experts consider highly unlikely.
That patient suffered long-term and permanent damage.
Medical Licenses Suspended
Following these incidents, authorities took action:
- His Alabama medical licence was suspended in 2024
- His Florida licence was also suspended the same year
- His New York licence was suspended in 2025
Officials stated that his repeated mistakes and failure to take responsibility made him a danger to public health.
Current Status of the Case
Shaknovsky is currently being held in Walton County Jail and is waiting for his first court appearance. It is still unclear whether he has hired a lawyer to represent him.
The case has sparked widespread concern about how such serious mistakes could happen in a professional medical setting.
Why This Case Matters
This incident highlights the importance of strict medical standards and accountability. Patients trust doctors with their lives, and errors like these can have devastating consequences.
It also raises questions about how doctors are monitored and whether earlier action could have prevented such a tragedy.
The case against Dr. Shaknovsky is a serious reminder of the risks involved in medical procedures when proper care is not taken. While surgery always carries some level of risk, mistakes of this scale are extremely rare and deeply concerning.
The legal process will now decide his fate, but the loss suffered by the patient’s family cannot be undone. This incident also puts pressure on healthcare systems to improve safety checks and ensure that doctors with repeated errors are stopped before more harm occurs.
In the end, patient safety must always come first, and strict accountability is necessary to maintain trust in the medical profession.
