A newly released body camera video has raised serious questions about a police shooting in St. Louis, where a 17-year-old boy was killed. The footage appears to contradict the earlier statement given by police, creating fresh concerns about transparency and accountability.
What the Video Shows
The victim, Emeshyon Wilkins, was shot in June 2024, just weeks after turning 17. According to the video, the teenager was running away from officers when he was shot. One of the bullets hit him in the back of the head, which led to his death. The footage does not show him pointing a gun at officers, which goes against the earlier claim made by police.
Police Version vs Video Evidence
Initially, police had said that Wilkins pointed a gun at officers, which led to the shooting. However, the video tells a different story. It shows an officer chasing Wilkins and shouting at him to stop and drop a weapon. While running, Wilkins does not appear to turn back or threaten the officer. Moments later, the officer fires multiple shots.
Later, it was found that Wilkins did have a firearm in his pocket, but it was taken apart into pieces and could not be used. This detail has raised further doubts about whether he posed any real threat at the time of the shooting.
Legal Battle to Access the Video
The video was obtained by Al Watkins, a lawyer representing Wilkins’ family. He said that authorities refused to release the footage for more than a year. According to him, the family had to file a federal lawsuit to finally access the video. He criticised the delay and said it showed a lack of transparency from the police department.
Police Response After Video Release
After the video became public, the police admitted that the initial information shared about the incident was not accurate. They said that early reports were based on third-party information, which did not match what actually happened.
The department has now said it will improve its process. In future cases, body camera footage will be reviewed earlier so that correct information can be shared with the public.
Connection to Past Incidents
This case has reminded many people of the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, a suburb of St. Louis. Brown, who was also Black and unarmed, was shot by a police officer, leading to months of protests and nationwide discussions about police reform.
Many believed that changes would follow after that incident, but cases like this have raised concerns about whether enough progress has been made.
Family Seeks Justice
Wilkins had no criminal record, according to his lawyer. His family is now demanding answers and justice. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on desk duty with pay, which has also been criticised by the family’s lawyer.
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office has said it is reviewing the case carefully to decide whether any criminal charges should be filed.
The release of this body camera footage has brought new attention to the case and raised serious concerns about how the incident was handled. The difference between the police’s initial statement and the video evidence has led to questions about trust and accountability.
As the legal process continues, the focus will remain on whether justice is served and whether proper action is taken. This case also highlights the importance of transparency in law enforcement and the need for timely sharing of accurate information with the public.
