A decades-old murder case has finally seen a major breakthrough, bringing some relief to a family that waited more than 30 years for answers. What once seemed like a mystery lost in time has now resurfaced with fresh evidence, leading to the arrest of a man already linked to another troubling disappearance.
Arrest in a 30-Year-Old Murder Case
A 54-year-old man, Robert William McCaffrey Jr., has been arrested for the 1990 murder of 27-year-old Lisa Marie McBride in New Jersey. Authorities have charged him with first-degree murder, kidnapping, and burglary.
He was taken into custody in North Carolina by a multi-state police team and is currently waiting to be sent back to New Jersey for trial. This arrest comes after years of investigation and new forensic developments.
Victim Disappeared After Returning Home
Lisa Marie McBride was last seen on June 23, 1990, after she returned home in Vernon Township following a night out with friends. She was seen entering her house around 2 a.m., and that was the last time anyone saw her alive.
Later that morning, when she didn’t respond to calls, a worried co-worker contacted her brother. When he went to check on her, he found disturbing signs inside the home and immediately called the police.
Signs of Struggle Inside the House
Police found clear evidence that something was wrong. The house showed signs of forced entry and a struggle. Investigators noted:
- A cut telephone line
- A damaged window screen
- Items scattered across the house
- A bed that had been stripped
McBride was missing, and there were no clear answers at the time.
Discovery of Remains Months Later
In October 1990, a hunter discovered skeletal remains in a wooded area of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. These remains were later identified as Lisa Marie McBride through dental records.
Her death was ruled a homicide. However, due to the condition of the remains, investigators had limited forensic evidence, and the case remained unsolved for decades.
Breakthrough with DNA Technology
The major turning point came years later due to advancements in DNA technology. In 2022, authorities exhumed McBride’s remains and conducted advanced forensic testing.
This testing reportedly linked Robert McCaffrey Jr. to the crime. Although officials have not shared full details, they confirmed that DNA evidence played a key role in identifying him as a suspect.
This breakthrough finally gave hope to the victim’s family after decades of uncertainty.
Connection to Another Disappearance
McCaffrey had already been under suspicion in another case — the disappearance of his wife, Gayle McCaffrey, in 2012. She was later declared dead in 2018, but her body has never been found.
In that case, McCaffrey reported her missing and claimed she had left after an argument. He even presented a typed “farewell” letter, which investigators later proved was fake.
He was convicted of obstruction of justice and served a 10-year prison sentence, before being released in 2023.
Authorities Continue Investigation
Officials have made it clear that the New Jersey murder case and his wife’s disappearance are separate investigations. However, both cases have raised serious concerns about McCaffrey’s past actions.
He is currently being held in North Carolina and will soon be extradited to New Jersey, where he will face trial for the murder of Lisa Marie McBride.
