Pauls Valley High School Principal Kirk Moore was injured in a shooting incident at the school on Tuesday, when he was shot by a former student, law enforcement officials confirmed. The shooting took place in the school’s lobby area.

Details of the Incident

The Garvin County Sheriff’s Office reported that Principal Moore was shot in the leg but is in stable condition. Authorities also confirmed that all students are safe, and there is no ongoing threat to the community. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Victor Hawkins, a former student of the school, was detained shortly after the incident.

Moore and other school staff members tried to subdue Hawkins after he entered the school, leading to a confrontation in the lobby. Moore was the only person injured during the struggle.

Suspect’s Actions and Motive

According to an affidavit from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), Hawkins entered the school carrying two loaded semi-automatic pistols that he had taken from his father’s closet.

The affidavit revealed that Hawkins initially pointed a gun at a girl sitting in the lobby. Although he tried to fire, the gun malfunctioned and did not discharge. Hawkins then allegedly aimed the gun at another student.

It was at this point that Principal Moore emerged from his office and charged at Hawkins. Moore was shot in the leg during the confrontation but managed to tackle, disarm, and restrain Hawkins until law enforcement arrived at the scene.

During questioning, Hawkins reportedly told OSBI agents that he intended to kill students, faculty, and himself. He also stated that he wanted to conduct his own school shooting similar to the 1999 Columbine shooting and specifically wanted to target Principal Moore because of personal animosity.

Charges and Arrest

Hawkins was arrested and booked into the Garvin County Jail on multiple charges, including shooting with intent to kill, unlawful carry of a firearm, and pointing a firearm. The OSBI has taken over the investigation.

Reactions and Support for Moore

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt praised Principal Moore’s bravery in protecting students’ lives, stating, “Principal Moore acted bravely to protect students’ lives. Sarah and I are praying for his quick recovery. I’m thankful for the swift response from law enforcement and school staff, and I’m grateful no students were harmed.”

School Response and Support Services

Following the shooting, the school district announced that all classes would be canceled on Wednesday. The district also assured that counselors would be available for students and staff to help them cope with the trauma from the incident.
