A California couple, Oriana Elias, 38, and Vincent Gibbs, 39, were sentenced to 22 years to life in prison for the tragic slaying of their 16-year-old daughter, Pearlene Valavala.
The couple was convicted of second-degree murder, torture, child abuse, causing great bodily injury, and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.
The sentencing follows the August 2021 death of their daughter after a prolonged and brutal punishment over “inappropriate text messages.”

The couple subjected their daughter to “strenuous exercises in the hot sun,” followed by hours of beating with a wooden plank and a belt. The violence was reportedly witnessed by Pearlene’s sisters, who were forced to watch the abuse unfold.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, after enduring the intense physical punishment, Pearlene collapsed and died in a makeshift bathroom inside the family’s trailer. The trailer, which lacked running water and electricity, served as the location for the horrific incident.
The Call for Help and Attempt to Cover Up the Crime
After Pearlene’s death, Elias and Gibbs called 911 but instructed their daughters to lie to police and paramedics, urging them not to reveal what had transpired. Despite the attempts to cover up their actions, the couple was arrested and charged with the murder and abuse of their daughter.
Prosecutors indicated that the abuse inflicted on Pearlene was done with “the intent to cause cruel and extreme pain and suffering for the purpose of revenge, extortion, persuasion, and for a sadistic purpose,” according to the criminal complaint.
