A tragic neighbourhood dispute in the United States turned deadly and later became a widely discussed case across the country. The incident, involving a woman who claimed self-defence, has raised serious questions about gun laws, safety, and community conflicts.
Who Is Susan Lorincz?
Susan Lorincz is a woman from Ocala, Florida, who was convicted for the fatal shooting of her neighbour. She was born in 1964 and lived in a rented apartment where she reportedly had ongoing issues with people in the neighbourhood.
Many residents claimed that she often complained about children playing nearby and had frequent arguments with neighbours.
Conflict With Neighbours Over Time
The dispute between Lorincz and her neighbours reportedly began in early 2022. She regularly called the police, complaining about noise, trespassing, and children playing in an open field.
According to reports, she had repeated arguments with local kids and even used offensive language towards them. Several neighbours stated that conflicts with her were common in the area.
Her relationship with Ajike Owens and her family was especially tense.
What Happened on June 2, 2023
On the evening of June 2, 2023, things escalated. Lorincz allegedly threw a roller skate at Owens’ 10-year-old son during an argument.
After hearing about the incident, Ajike Owens, a 35-year-old mother of four, went to Lorincz’s apartment to speak with her.
While Owens stood outside and knocked on the door, Lorincz fired a gun through the locked door. The bullet hit Owens in the chest, and she later died from her injuries.
Initial Defence and Investigation
After the shooting, Lorincz claimed that she acted in self-defence. She said she felt threatened and feared for her life.
Under Florida’s “stand your ground” law, authorities had to carefully investigate whether her actions were legally justified before making an arrest.
During the investigation, police spoke with witnesses, reviewed evidence, and analysed the situation. They found that Owens was unarmed and had not tried to break into the home.
Charges Filed Against Lorincz
After completing the investigation, police concluded that the use of deadly force was not justified.
Lorincz was arrested and charged with:
- Manslaughter with a firearm
- Culpable negligence
- Battery
- Two counts of assault
However, she was not charged with murder due to lack of sufficient evidence for that specific charge.
Trial and Court Verdict
The trial began in August 2024. Lorincz’s defence team argued that she was scared and believed she was in danger.
On the other hand, prosecutors pointed out that:
- Owens was unarmed
- The door was locked
- Lorincz was not in immediate danger
After a short deliberation, the jury found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter.
Sentence and Court Observations
In November 2024, Lorincz was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The judge stated that the shooting was unnecessary and that she was in a safe position inside her home at the time.
Even though her defence team spoke about her difficult past and mental health struggles, the court did not consider it enough to reduce the sentence.
Lorincz later apologised in court, saying she never intended to kill Owens. However, the victim’s family felt the apology was not sincere.
Where Is She Now?
Currently, Susan Lorincz is serving her sentence at a correctional facility in South Florida.
Her expected release date is in February 2048. In a later interview, she again claimed that she was scared during the incident and never imagined such a tragedy would happen.
