A tragic incident in the United States has left a community in shock after two volunteer firefighters lost their lives while helping in a search operation. The heartbreaking event highlights the risks first responders face, even during rescue missions.
Fatal Crash During Search Operation
The incident took place on April 4 in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, where emergency teams were searching for a missing 60-year-old woman. Among them were members of the Walnuttown Fire Company.
Chief Jeffory Buck, 60, and Assistant Chief Robert Shick Jr., 56, were travelling in a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) along Route 222, also known as Kutztown Road. According to officials, they were moving slowly on the roadside while assisting in the search.
At the same time, a car driven by 26-year-old Alexander Sepulveda Rivera was reportedly moving erratically on the road.
Driver Allegedly Under the Influence
Authorities say Rivera was driving a Toyota Camry and was “weaving” between lanes before suddenly losing control. His vehicle reportedly left its lane and moved onto the roadside, crashing directly into the firefighters’ UTV.
The impact was severe, and both firefighters died as a result of the crash.
After the accident, Rivera and another person in the car allegedly fled the scene. However, with the help of witnesses, police were able to locate and arrest them nearby.
Admissions and Evidence
During questioning, Rivera admitted that he was driving the car at the time of the crash. He told authorities that he had fallen asleep behind the wheel.
Police also revealed that he admitted to using marijuana earlier that day. Additionally, officers found a crack pipe in his possession, which he claimed belonged to him.
Authorities further stated that Rivera did not have a valid driving licence and may never have had one. He has since undergone a blood test as part of the investigation.
Charges Filed Against the Accused
Rivera is now facing multiple serious charges, including:
- Two counts of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence
- Two counts of homicide by vehicle
- Leaving the scene of an accident involving death
- Driving under the influence (DUI)
He is currently in police custody. There has been no confirmation of charges against the second person who was in the vehicle.

The deaths of Chief Buck and Assistant Chief Shick have deeply affected the local community. Both were respected members of the Walnuttown Fire Company and were actively serving during the search operation when the tragedy occurred.
The fire company shared an emotional message, honouring their service and sacrifice.
Local leaders also expressed their condolences, recognising the bravery and dedication of the two firefighters who lost their lives while helping others.
