A disturbing case from the United States has come forward where a woman is accused of keeping her own sister-in-law locked in a basement for years under inhuman conditions. The shocking details have raised serious concerns about abuse, neglect, and the safety of vulnerable adults.
Woman Accused of Locking Relative in Basement
Tasha Beamon, a 48-year-old woman from Michigan, has been arrested and charged with unlawful imprisonment and first-degree abuse of a vulnerable adult. Police say she kept her 58-year-old sister-in-law confined in a locked basement for nearly two years.
According to authorities, the victim was not allowed to leave and had very limited access to basic needs like food and water.
How the Victim Managed to Escape
The case came to light on March 15 when police responded to a call about a broken window at a house on Gilbert Street in Saginaw. When officers arrived, they found a woman who claimed she had just escaped captivity.
The victim said she broke a neighbour’s window using a metal pipe so that someone would notice and call the police. Her first request to the neighbour was to contact authorities immediately.
Living Conditions Inside the Basement
The woman described extremely harsh and inhumane conditions. She told police that:
- She was rarely given food and water
- She had no proper access to a bathroom or shower
- She was forced to stay on a mattress in the basement
- A radio was kept on constantly near her
Police later confirmed many of these claims during their investigation. Officers found:
- A locked basement door that could not be opened from inside
- A mattress on the floor
- Containers filled with urine
- Signs of poor hygiene and neglect
These findings supported the victim’s statement that she was being held against her will.
Victim’s Health Condition
After her rescue, the woman was taken to a hospital. Medical staff found that she was severely malnourished and in a critical condition.
Reports suggest that her health had deteriorated so much that her life could have been at risk if she had not escaped in time.
A neighbour who saw her described her as extremely weak and underweight, saying she looked much older than her actual age.
Accused’s Statement and Motive
During questioning, Tasha Beamon admitted that the woman was staying in her home and was not allowed to leave. However, she claimed the victim was living in an upstairs bedroom.
Police say this claim does not match the evidence found in the basement.
Investigators also believe there may have been a financial motive behind the abuse. They suspect that Beamon kept the victim confined in order to collect her disability payments.
Legal Action and Current Status
Beamon is currently in custody at the Saginaw County Jail. A judge has set her bond at $100,000.
She is scheduled to appear in court again on April 20, where further legal proceedings will take place.
