An Ohio mother has been arrested after her 8-year-old child brought a loaded 9mm handgun to Longcoy Elementary School in Kent, Ohio. The incident occurred on Thursday, April 2, when a student alerted a teacher about seeing a gun tucked into a second grader’s waistband during recess. The Kent Police Department (KPD) responded to the scene and quickly secured the weapon, with no injuries reported.
Details of the Incident
According to the KPD, staff at the school were alerted by another student who noticed the gun on the second grader. The staff was able to locate the loaded handgun in the student’s backpack and immediately removed it from the premises.
An investigation into the situation revealed that the 8-year-old had easy access to the firearm at home and had intentionally brought it to school, although the purpose of bringing the weapon remains unclear.
Charges and Arrest
The child’s mother, 34-year-old Gloria Luster, was arrested and charged with child endangerment, a first-degree misdemeanor, according to the Kent Police Department. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Importance of Reporting
The Kent Police Department praised the bravery of the student who reported the gun to a teacher, which helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation. The KPD issued a statement expressing gratitude to both the student and the Longcoy Elementary staff for their quick response in securing the weapon.
“Kent Police are grateful to the young student who was brave enough to tell a teacher what they had seen, and proud of Longcoy Elementary staff for their quick thinking and swift action,” the department said.
They also reminded parents of the importance of securely storing firearms and ammunition at home. “Parents are reminded to safely secure all weapons and ammunition, and encourage kids that if they ‘See something, say something,'” the statement continued.
Reassurance from School Authorities
In a recorded phone message to the school community, Kent City School District Superintendent Tom Larkin reassured parents and guardians that all students and staff were safe. “A student brought a handgun to school.
I want to reassure you that all students and staff are safe,” Larkin said. He emphasized that the weapon was quickly secured, and the Kent Police Department was promptly notified.
Larkin further explained that appropriate safety procedures were followed, and that the school’s principal had launched an internal investigation, which is still ongoing. Due to the involvement of a minor, the investigation is subject to privacy laws, and additional details have not been disclosed.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Awareness
The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement officials working closely with school administrators to ensure that all aspects of the situation are fully explored. The Kent Police Department is continuing to investigate how the child gained access to the weapon and whether there were any contributing factors to the child’s actions.
This incident has raised significant concerns about firearm safety and responsibility in homes, as well as the importance of vigilance in schools. Authorities continue to urge parents to store weapons securely and remind students to report anything suspicious.
