A major development has come up in the high-profile case involving the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Lawyers for the accused are now questioning key forensic evidence, which could impact how the case moves forward.
Defence Questions Key Evidence
The legal team representing Tyler Robinson has filed a new motion in court. In this filing, they claim that authorities have not been able to prove that the bullet used in the killing matches a gun linked to their client.
According to the defence, a report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) failed to connect the bullet recovered during the autopsy to the rifle allegedly connected to Robinson.
Request to Delay Court Hearing
Based on this claim, Robinson’s lawyers have asked the court to delay the upcoming preliminary hearing scheduled for May.
They argue that they need more time to:
- Review the full ATF case file
- Study the testing methods used
- Consult with their own firearm expert
The defence also mentioned that they might present the ATF analyst’s findings as evidence in favour of Robinson.
Ongoing Forensic Analysis
The case is still under investigation, with more tests being conducted. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is currently working on:
- A second bullet comparison test
- A bullet lead analysis
These reports are not yet complete, which is another reason the defence is seeking more time.

Authorities allege that Robinson shot Charlie Kirk during a public event organised by Turning Point USA.
The incident took place on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Investigators say Kirk was shot from a distance of more than 100 yards while speaking at the event.
Arrest After Manhunt
After the shooting, police launched a large manhunt. Robinson was eventually arrested after a tip-off from someone close to him, which helped authorities track him down.
Serious Charges Filed
Robinson is facing multiple serious charges, including aggravated murder. So far, he has not entered a plea in court.
Prosecutors have also indicated that they may seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
