A tragic medical case from California has shocked many people after a newborn baby died following a routine procedure. What Happened in the Case
According to court records, Hong-An Jan, a doctor in California, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a newborn named Charles Wang. The incident happened on February 27, 2024, during a circumcision procedure at the doctor’s private clinic, Garden Grove Medical Plaza.
The baby’s parents, Yiqi Wang and Hongyu Lu, had chosen the doctor after being discharged from the hospital. Initially, everything seemed normal after the baby’s birth, and there were no health concerns.
However, things took a serious turn shortly after the procedure.
Allegations of Wrong Drug Administration
The lawsuit claims that the doctor gave the baby Demerol, which is a strong narcotic painkiller, instead of Xylocaine, a local anesthetic commonly used for minor procedures like circumcision.
This is a major issue because Demerol is a Schedule II drug, which means it is powerful and can be dangerous, especially for infants. The parents say they were never informed about this drug being used.
Even more concerning, medical reports allegedly stated that the doctor used the correct anesthetic, which raises questions about possible false documentation.
Baby’s Condition After the Procedure
Within hours of the circumcision, baby Charles started showing serious symptoms:
- Extreme sleepiness (lethargy)
- Not responding properly
- Refusing to feed
- Difficulty waking up
The parents were worried and contacted the doctor multiple times. According to the lawsuit, the doctor reassured them that these symptoms were normal.
Later that day, when the baby’s condition did not improve, they took him back to the clinic. The doctor again checked the baby and told them everything was fine.
Sadly, that reassurance turned out to be wrong.
Tragic Death and Hospital Visit
That night, the parents went to sleep while the baby was still unwell. A few hours later, the mother woke up and found that the baby was not breathing and felt cold.
They rushed him to the hospital immediately, where doctors tried to save him. Unfortunately, their efforts failed, and the baby was declared dead shortly after 4 a.m.
Initially, the death was believed to be due to natural causes. But later investigations revealed a different story.
Investigation and Legal Action
A toxicology report showed that the baby had high levels of Demerol in his system, pointing towards a drug overdose as the cause of death.
This discovery led to a police investigation. A grand jury later indicted the doctor. A detective described the incident as “negligent and preventable.”
The doctor has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court on May 1. Meanwhile, his medical licence has been suspended until the case is resolved.
