An Illinois man has been found guilty by a federal jury after repeatedly posting threats against U.S. President Donald Trump on social media. The case has raised serious concerns about online behaviour, public safety, and how authorities handle such threats. The man, identified as Trent Schneider, shared several disturbing videos and messages that led to his arrest and conviction.
Who Is Trent Schneider and What Happened?
Trent Schneider, a 58-year-old resident of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, was convicted for making threats across state lines. His trial lasted three days in a U.S. District Court in Chicago. According to officials, Schneider posted multiple videos and messages on Instagram where he openly spoke about Donald Trump and other public figures.
In one video, he directly addressed the camera and made alarming statements about getting weapons and “taking care of business.” These posts were not isolated. In fact, authorities reported that he made at least 18 such threats online.
Details of the Social Media Posts
Schneider’s Instagram activity played a key role in the case. His posts included:
- Videos tagged with the location of Trump Tower in Chicago
- Messages directly mentioning Trump’s public social media accounts
- Strong and abusive language targeting public officials
In one post, he used extreme words and said that people “need to die,” clearly showing anger and frustration. He also shared the same video multiple times in a single day, increasing concern among viewers.
Interestingly, one of his posts included a caption claiming, “THIS IS NOT A THREAT!!!” However, authorities and the court found the content serious enough to be treated as a real threat.
How Authorities Responded
A concerned citizen in Florida saw one of Schneider’s videos and reported it to law enforcement. This shows how public awareness can play an important role in preventing possible crimes.
After receiving the report, authorities visited Schneider’s home on October 22. During the interaction, Schneider reportedly became very angry and started shouting at officers. Soon after they left, he posted another video, this time showing the officers walking away, along with the same threatening caption.
Following this, Schneider was arrested at his residence.
Behaviour During Court Appearances
Schneider’s behaviour in court also raised concerns. During one hearing, he reportedly told the judge that he would “burn this castle down.” When asked if it was a threat, he denied it.
In another unusual moment, he asked if he could stay at a “Trump motel” with popcorn. These statements added to the seriousness of the case and showed unpredictable behaviour.
Past Criminal Record
This was not Schneider’s first legal issue. According to officials, he has a long criminal history. In 2022, he was arrested for allegedly threatening to “shoot up” a T-Mobile store. However, in that case, he was declared unfit to stand trial.
Authorities also found that he had posted several violent messages about public officials on different social media platforms in the past.
Use of Social Media and Identity
Prosecutors stated that Schneider used an Instagram account with the username “truthreaper888” to post his videos. In many of these clips, he was seen wearing a black cap with a skull design, similar to the “Punisher” comic character.
This consistent appearance helped investigators connect him to the posts and build their case.
Message from Authorities
After the conviction, U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros made it clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated. He said that threatening political leaders or members of the judiciary is never acceptable and will lead to serious consequences.
This case highlights how online threats are taken seriously, even if someone claims they are not real.
