A serious incident at a grocery store in Florida has turned into a major legal case. A man has been accused of violently attacking another customer, leaving him with life-changing injuries. Now, the victim’s family is seeking justice and holding multiple parties responsible for what happened.
Customer Accused of Violent Attack at Grocery Store
Dandrea Johnson, 45, has been charged with felony battery after allegedly attacking Bruce Reese at an Aldi store in Lauderdale Lakes.
The incident took place in October 2025. Police say Johnson punched Reese near the store’s exit, causing severe injuries.
Lawsuit Filed Against Store and Security Company
Months after the criminal charges, Reese’s family filed a lawsuit in Broward County. The case names:
- Dandrea Johnson
- Aldi
- DF Security LLC
The family claims that the store and its security team failed to prevent the attack or take action when the situation escalated.
Argument Started Inside the Store
According to the lawsuit, Johnson and Reese were both regular customers at the store. On the night of the incident, Reese was shopping with his service dog.
The situation reportedly began when Johnson confronted Reese about the dog. The lawsuit claims Johnson started verbally harassing Reese as soon as he entered the store.
The argument continued for several minutes and moved across different areas of the store.
No Action Taken by Staff or Security
The lawsuit alleges that:
- Store employees and security guards saw the argument
- No one stepped in to calm the situation
- One guard reportedly remained at his post without reacting
The family claims that proper action at this stage could have prevented the attack.
Attack Left Victim in Coma
After leaving the store, Reese was allegedly attacked near the exit. Johnson is accused of suddenly punching him without warning.
The impact caused Reese to:
- Fall head-first onto the ground
- Lose consciousness immediately
- Suffer a traumatic brain injury
He remained in a coma for 20 days. Reports say he now has severe brain damage and cannot live independently.
Suspect’s Behaviour Known to Management
The lawsuit also claims that Johnson was known to store management as an aggressive and unruly customer.
It further alleges that:
- The store is located in a high-crime area
- Only one unarmed security guard was present
- Security arrangements did not meet proper standards
These points are being used to argue that the store failed to provide a safe environment.
Family Seeks $30 Million in Damages
Reese’s family is asking for $30 million in damages and has requested a jury trial.
Their lawyer, Justin Shapiro, said the goal is to ensure such incidents do not happen again.
As of now, none of the accused parties have officially responded to the lawsuit.
Criminal Case Still Ongoing
Apart from the civil lawsuit, Johnson is also facing criminal charges. His next court hearing is scheduled for May 8.
