A tragic road rage incident in Arizona has shocked many people, especially because it led to the death of a young man who was soon going to become a father. What started as a small argument on the road quickly turned into a deadly crash, leaving a family heartbroken and searching for answers.
What Happened in the Incident
According to police reports, 29-year-old Gustavo Elias has been charged with second-degree murder after he allegedly hit a motorcycle rider, 21-year-old Dezjon Hamilton, with his SUV. The incident took place in Chandler, Arizona.
Police say both men already knew each other as they lived in the same apartment complex. Their conflict did not begin on that day alone. Investigators believe there had been previous arguments between them, mainly related to driving behaviour.
On the day of the incident, the situation started to get worse near a road intersection when Hamilton reportedly revved his motorcycle engine loudly in front of Elias’ vehicle. Elias later told police that similar incidents had happened earlier, including one in a Walmart parking area.
Escalation from Argument to Violence
Things quickly escalated when both vehicles stopped at a traffic signal. According to statements given by children who were inside Elias’ SUV, Hamilton again revved his motorcycle engine while waiting at the red light.
After the signal turned green, both vehicles started moving, and the situation became more aggressive. Witnesses and reports suggest:
- Both vehicles were speeding on the road
- The motorcycle came close to the SUV
- There may have been minor contact between the two
Instead of stopping or avoiding the situation, Elias allegedly chased Hamilton. Police say he increased his speed and moved his SUV next to the motorcycle.
The Fatal Crash
The most serious moment came when Elias allegedly turned his SUV towards the motorcycle on purpose. According to police:
- He intentionally rammed the motorcycle
- He was aware that such an action could cause serious injury
- Two children were present in the vehicle during the incident
Hamilton suffered severe neck injuries in the crash. He was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support. Sadly, doctors later confirmed that he was brain dead. His family made the painful decision to remove him from life support, and he passed away shortly after.
Driver’s Condition and Confession
One of the most shocking details in the case is that Elias reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol and using drugs before driving. Police say:
- He consumed around 12 beers
- He had also taken cocaine
- His blood alcohol level was 0.158, which is almost double the legal limit
Witnesses at the scene also claimed that Elias admitted his mistake. He was reportedly heard saying, “I know this is my fault.”
Because of the seriousness of the crime, he has been arrested and is being held on a high cash-only bond.
Impact on the Victim’s Family
This incident has left Hamilton’s family completely shattered. He was only 21 years old and had his whole life ahead of him. Even more heartbreaking is the fact that his girlfriend is pregnant.
