A 65-year-old Idaho woman, Diane Wetherbee, has been arrested and charged with felony aggravated battery after allegedly shooting a man in the leg during an argument, then going to sleep as if nothing had happened. The shooting occurred in Challis on Saturday night.
Shooting Incident
According to court documents, Wetherbee and the man were drinking together at a home when they began arguing. The man reportedly handed Wetherbee a .380 pistol and dared her to shoot him. Allegedly, Wetherbee complied, firing a shot that struck the man in the leg.
After the incident, Wetherbee reportedly went upstairs to a bedroom and fell asleep, while another man in the home heard the gunshot but did not witness the shooting.
Police Response and Arrest
Deputies were called to the scene around 11:23 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found Wetherbee asleep in the bedroom. The pistol she allegedly used to shoot the man was located on the floor of the bedroom, surrounded by bloodstains.
A further search of the house revealed more blood, including a pair of bloodied boots near the back door. Wetherbee reportedly confessed to the shooting on her way to the Custer County Jail.
Charges and Bond
Wetherbee has been charged with felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and is being held on a $25,000 bond. A judge has issued a no-contact order, preventing her from having any further communication with the victim. Wetherbee is scheduled to appear in court on March 30 for a preliminary hearing.
