A Pennsylvania mother, Katrina Pantuso, is facing multiple charges following the tragic death of her 2-month-old daughter, Layla Raine Pantuso Olesh. The infant’s death occurred on November 4, 2025, after what authorities believe was a combination of co-sleeping and the mother’s drug use, leading to asphyxia or overlay.
The Tragic Incident
Police responded to a distress call around 1:45 p.m. on November 4, 2025, reporting an infant who was unresponsive and unable to breathe.
Despite the best efforts of first responders to revive the baby, she was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office could not definitively determine the cause of death but speculated that asphyxia or overlay may have played a role.
Pantuso told investigators that she had been co-sleeping with her daughter when the incident occurred. Police found a bassinet beside the bed and a leafy substance they suspected to be marijuana on a nearby desk. The results of Pantuso’s blood test later revealed the presence of methamphetamine, cannabinoids, and methadone, a sedating medication.
The Evidence and Findings
The autopsy revealed troubling details about the baby’s death. The report noted the combination of bed-sharing with pillows and blankets and Pantuso’s use of methadone. The baby’s positioning was consistent with being face-down, which the coroner suggested could have led to asphyxia or suffocation due to the mother’s drugged state.
Additionally, injuries to the baby’s head and scalp were found, which may have occurred during the overlay incident. However, authorities did not rule out the possibility of inflicted head trauma.
Pantuso’s phone messages provided further evidence of her dangerous behavior. The forensic analysis showed she had used drugs the day of the incident, as well as instances where she had fed her daughter and fallen asleep. One message even revealed that Pantuso had previously dropped the baby on the floor.
Prior Warnings and the Bassinet
Authorities confirmed that Pantuso had been warned multiple times about the dangers of co-sleeping, and she had been educated about the risks involved. A bassinet was provided to her specifically to prevent co-sleeping, and it was found next to the bed. Despite these precautions, Pantuso continued her risky behavior, which ultimately led to her daughter’s death.
Legal Charges and Arrest
Pantuso is currently facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of children, and reckless endangerment. She was unable to post her $100,000 bail and is being held at the Lehigh County Jail while awaiting further legal proceedings.
