A Florida man is in police custody, accused of killing two people in a jealous rage, law enforcement and family report. Christian Barrios, 32, faces multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, burglary, illegal firearm possession, and grand theft of a motor vehicle.
Victims Identified
The victims, 46-year-old Melissa Wood and 42-year-old Jason Chatham, both residents of Atlantic Beach, were shot and killed on the night of March 13 at a Walgreens pharmacy in Ponte Vedra Beach, a suburb of Jacksonville. The shooting led to their deaths shortly after they were transported to nearby hospitals.
The Shooting Incident
Deputies were called to the Walgreens on the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway around 10:30 p.m. following reports of shots fired. After the incident, Barrios was quickly tracked by K-9 units and arrested the next day in Nassau County after a car crash and a foot pursuit.
Barrios’ Criminal History
St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick confirmed that Barrios, a known criminal, was on probation at the time of the killings. Hardwick expressed his frustration over the situation, stating, “Here we are dumping all these resources, and families are gonna mourn two people that were shot and killed in a parking lot of Walgreens over a domestic violence situation.”
Motive Behind the Shooting
Investigators believe the attack was fueled by romantic jealousy. Barrios allegedly believed his ex-girlfriend, Melissa Wood, was being unfaithful. According to an arrest warrant, Barrios asked his mother to drive him to the location where he thought he would find Wood with another man. Upon spotting her car, Barrios reportedly jumped out of the car, fired multiple shots, and fled the scene.
Family Reactions
The victim’s family expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy. Melissa Wood’s brother, Jeremy Hackward, posted an emotional tribute on a GoFundMe page, where donations are being sought for funeral costs and other financial obligations.
Wood’s daughter shared that her mother had a caring nature and disputed the claim of infidelity. “She had a lot of love to give,” she said, remembering her mother’s selflessness and kindness.
Remembering the Victims
Wood was remembered fondly by her family for her generosity, compassion, and the love she gave to others. She leaves behind two children and recently became a grandmother.
Jason Chatham was also fondly remembered by his niece, Aliya Jade, who posted a heartfelt message on social media, expressing her love for him and hoping he was “dancing in the sky.”
