A correctional officer in Texas has been arrested after allegedly smuggling tobacco into a prison using burritos. James Byron Thibodeaux, 66, faces charges for his role in the contraband scheme at the Bradshaw Unit in Henderson, Texas.

Discovery of Contraband

On March 12, staff at the Bradshaw Unit contacted the Office of Inspector General investigator, Daniel Johnson, after discovering contraband in a restroom trash can. The staff had noticed Thibodeaux leaving the restroom just before the contraband was found. Investigators launched an inquiry into the incident.

Thibodeaux’s Admission

When questioned by investigators, Thibodeaux allegedly admitted to the smuggling operation. He confessed that he had placed tobacco into burritos and dropped them into the trash, where an inmate would later retrieve them. Thibodeaux was reportedly set to receive payment for the delivery via a cash app.

Charges and Arrest

Thibodeaux was arrested on March 12, facing charges of third-degree bribery and possession of prohibited substances in a correctional facility. He was released two days later on a $15,000 bond. If convicted, Thibodeaux could face a sentence ranging from two to 20 years in prison, along with potential fines up to $10,000.
