A Florida man is facing multiple charges after allegedly pushing a rescuer overboard and stealing his boat following a dramatic rescue near Marco Island on March 6, 2026.
The Incident Near Marco Island
Authorities responded to reports of a burning boat near Marco Island, Florida, on March 6. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and Collier County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), a Sea Tow captain had helped rescue 40-year-old Ryan Dieter from the burning boat and brought him aboard his tow boat. However, after being rescued, Dieter allegedly pushed the captain into the water and stole his vessel, leaving the rescuer stranded.
Dieter’s Escape and Arrest
After taking the boat, Dieter allegedly grounded it and fled on foot. Local authorities later found him naked in nearby mangroves, according to Gulf Coast News. Fortunately, the Sea Tow captain was unharmed and found safe.
Local resident Nancy Cook expressed her shock at the situation, commenting, “I don’t know what his thinking process was, but somebody comes to help you, and then that’s what you do.” She added that the incident was disturbing, especially in a place where security is usually “wonderful.”
Charges Filed Against Dieter
Dieter was arrested the following day, March 7, and charged with multiple offenses, including grand theft, resisting arrest, operating a vessel while impaired, and burglary involving assault or battery, according to Collier County arrest records. Dieter is scheduled to appear in court on March 30, 2026. As of now, no bond information has been made public.
