Affair details revealed through messages
During the investigation, deputies first spoke to Campitelli’s husband, who told them she had gone out with friends that evening. But when detectives contacted those friends, they learned something very different. They said Campitelli had been involved in an extramarital relationship with Perez, who was a former co-worker.
Police then uncovered WhatsApp messages between the two. These messages showed they were planning to meet on the evening of her birthday. In one message sent the day before her death, Campitelli told Perez that she felt nervous and did not know what to expect because he had never done anything like that for her before.
Perez reportedly replied that she had nothing to worry about and that he wanted to show he could be romantic. The two then agreed to meet at 7:30 p.m. the next day.
These messages became important because they directly linked the pair to a planned private meeting on the night of the killing.
Perez’s statements and the contradictions
When detectives questioned Perez, he admitted that he and Campitelli had been involved in an affair for around two years. However, he denied meeting her that night. He claimed he had sent her a message cancelling the meeting because his son was sick.
Police said they found no such message.
His timeline also raised serious doubts. Perez told officers he left work around 11 p.m., but surveillance footage reportedly showed something else. According to investigators, video from his workplace showed him leaving at about 6:30 p.m. in his Honda Accord. He then returned shortly before midnight, stayed for around 10 minutes, and later drove home.
This evidence appeared to directly clash with the version of events he gave to police.
Evidence police say points to a cover-up
Investigators also say Perez took several steps to hide his actions. He allegedly told police that he often left his main phone at work when meeting Campitelli because he shared a Life360 tracking app with his wife. He would instead use a second phone to speak to Campitelli.
Detectives said they were unable to recover messages from that second phone, which made them suspect the conversations had been deleted.
Police also accused Perez of lying about losing his main phone. According to the affidavit, video from an AT&T store showed him holding that phone while buying a new one. Investigators believe this proved he had not really lost it.
In addition, detectives suspect that he got rid of the shoes he wore on the night of the killing. Authorities also placed his Honda near the medical centre parking lot where they believe he met Campitelli in her Tahoe.
All of this helped police build the case that Perez not only killed Campitelli but also tried to destroy or hide evidence afterwards.
