An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested after a pizza delivery driver was shot during a robbery in northeast Oklahoma City. Police say the violent incident happened on March 1 while the driver was working a routine delivery shift. The victim survived the shooting but now faces a long and painful recovery.
Authorities say the suspect, Jakobe Helms, is already in custody and faces several serious charges related to the attack.
Suspect Arrested in Oklahoma City Pizza Delivery Shooting
Oklahoma City police confirmed that 18-year-old Jakobe Helms has been arrested in connection with the robbery and shooting.
Helms was already in jail on unrelated crimes when investigators connected him to the case. He is currently being held in the Oklahoma County Jail.
Police say he is facing multiple complaints, including:
- Assault and battery with a deadly weapon
- First-degree robbery
Investigators believe Helms was one of two suspects involved in the attack. Police are still searching for the second suspect who remains unidentified.
Pizza Delivery Turned Dangerous
The victim, identified as Stephen, works as a delivery driver for Domino’s Pizza. He spoke from his hospital room about the terrifying moment the routine delivery turned into a violent robbery.
Stephen said he initially tried to deliver a pizza to a home in Oklahoma City. However, the people at the address told him they had not ordered any food.
When he called the phone number on the order, the person told him to meet at another location instead — the intersection of Northeast 15th Street and Irving.
Stephen said he felt uneasy about the situation but continued with the delivery.
He later admitted that his instincts warned him something might be wrong.
Robbery Happened Moments After Delivery
When Stephen arrived at the new location, he said two men approached him and paid for the pizza. At first, everything seemed normal.
The payment made him feel that the situation was safe.
Stephen explained that the transaction was completed without any problems. He handed over the pizza, and it seemed like the delivery was finished.
But only moments later, the situation suddenly turned violent.
Stephen said the two men pulled out a gun and attempted to rob him.
Driver Shot While Trying to Escape
As the robbery began, Stephen tried to escape.
He said his natural instinct was to run and get back into his car as quickly as possible. However, before he could leave, one of the suspects shot him in the back.
After the shooting, the suspects grabbed his delivery bag and ran away.
According to Stephen, the stolen bag contained more than just money.
Inside were several small items he carried while working, including:
- Cash from deliveries
- Dog treats
- A flashlight
- A fake wallet
The suspects reportedly fled the scene after taking the bag.
Victim Facing Long Recovery
Stephen survived the shooting but suffered serious injuries.
Doctors told him the bullet is still lodged in his back. According to medical experts, removing it could cause more damage, so it must remain there.
As a result, Stephen now faces a long recovery process.
He is currently working through physical therapy as he learns how to walk again.
Stephen described his recovery as slow but steady.
He says he is taking things one step at a time — both physically and mentally — while focusing on healing.
Police Searching for Second Suspect
While one suspect has been arrested, investigators say another person involved in the robbery has not yet been identified.
