The delays are linked to the ongoing partial government shutdown, which has left many Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents working without pay. As the busy spring break travel season begins, the situation is creating longer wait times and frustration for passengers.
Airports in cities like New Orleans, Houston, and Atlanta have already issued alerts asking travelers to arrive hours before their flights to avoid missing departures.
Government Shutdown Causes TSA Staff Shortage
The partial US government shutdown has started affecting airport operations. TSA agents, who are responsible for airport security checks, are expected to miss their first full paycheck due to the shutdown.
Because of this situation, some officers are not reporting to work. The shortage of staff is leading to slower security screening and longer lines at TSA checkpoints.
The shutdown began in February after funding for the Department of Homeland Security expired. Lawmakers were unable to reach an agreement on federal immigration enforcement policies, which caused the funding lapse.

The timing of the shutdown is making the issue more serious. Spring break is one of the busiest travel periods in the United States, with millions of passengers flying across the country.
With fewer TSA agents available to handle security screening, airports are seeing growing crowds and slower processing times.
Experts say delays could become more widespread if the shutdown continues and more security officers decide to stay home due to missed paychecks.
Airports Warning Passengers to Arrive Early
Several airports have already warned travelers about longer wait times at TSA checkpoints. Passengers are being advised to arrive much earlier than usual for their flights.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport
Officials at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport warned travelers that security wait times could reach up to two hours.
The airport advised passengers flying on Monday to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled flights. Authorities also said delays could continue throughout the week if the staffing shortage remains.
Houston Hobby Airport
Houston Hobby Airport also issued a warning to travelers. Airport officials said passengers should arrive three to four hours before their departure.
According to the airport, TSA wait times may exceed 120 minutes due to reduced staffing levels.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, also reported extended wait times at TSA security checkpoints.
Airport officials did not provide exact wait time estimates but strongly advised passengers to reach the airport early to avoid potential delays.
Shutdown Impact Could Spread to More Airports
So far, the longest lines have been reported at a limited number of airports. However, experts warn that the situation could expand across the country if the shutdown continues.
If more TSA agents stop working because of unpaid wages, travelers at other major airports may also face long security lines.
This is not the first time TSA agents have worked without pay during a government shutdown. During the record shutdown in October and November, security officers also missed paychecks but were later compensated with back pay once the government reopened.
