A late-night prank in Georgia turned tragic when a group of teenagers attempting to toilet-paper a house accidentally ran over the homeowner who came outside to confront them. The incident resulted in the death of a well-known high school teacher and coach, leaving the local community shocked and grieving.
Teen Charged After Prank Turns Deadly
Authorities in Hall County, Georgia, say 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving in connection with the death of 40-year-old Jason Hughes.
According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 11:30 p.m. on Friday in the 4400 block of North Gate Drive in Gainesville.
Investigators say Wallace and four other teenagers went to the property to carry out a prank commonly known as “TPing,” which involves throwing toilet paper over trees and objects outside a home.
Homeowner Came Outside to Confront Teens
Police say Jason Hughes came out of his home after noticing the group outside his property.
When Hughes approached them, the teens reportedly rushed back to their vehicles to leave the area.
During the chaotic moment, Hughes tripped and fell into the roadway while the teenagers were attempting to drive away.
Authorities allege that Wallace then ran over Hughes with his pickup truck.
Victim Dies at Hospital
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Hughes to a nearby hospital.
Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.
According to investigators, the teens remained at the scene after the incident and attempted to help until deputies arrived.
Other Teens Face Misdemeanor Charges
Four other 18-year-olds who were with Wallace during the prank are also facing charges.
Authorities identified them as:
- Elijah Tate Owens
- Aiden Hucks
- Ana Katherine Luque
- Ariana Cruz
The four teens have been charged with misdemeanor offenses, including criminal trespass and littering on private property.
Investigators have not said whether the group specifically targeted Hughes’ home or if they knew him before the incident.
Victim Was Beloved Teacher and Coach
Jason Hughes was a math teacher and coach at North Hall High School, where he was well-known and respected by students and staff.
Following news of his death, the school opened its doors on Saturday to allow students and community members to gather and grieve.
Former student Shayden Maynor described Hughes as someone who cared deeply about his students and was always willing to support them.
According to Maynor, Hughes helped many students through difficult times and was widely admired throughout the community.
School District Shares Statement
The school district released a statement expressing heartbreak over the loss of Hughes.
Officials described him as a loving husband, devoted father, and passionate educator who made a lasting impact on students and colleagues.
The district also extended condolences to his family during this difficult time.
Community Raises Support for Family
Hughes leaves behind his wife and two young sons.
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was created to support the family. By Sunday morning, the fundraiser had already collected more than $100,000.
Organisers described Hughes as a person who positively influenced many lives and said his sudden death will be deeply felt by the community for years to come.
Suspect Remains in Jail
Jayden Ryan Wallace is currently being held in the Hall County Jail without bond.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing as they continue reviewing the events that led to the tragic accident.
