A tragic incident in the US state of Michigan has led to serious criminal charges against a mother after her young daughter was accidentally shot and killed by her own brother. The heartbreaking case has raised concerns about firearm safety and leaving children unattended in vehicles.
Mother Accused After Child Fatally Shoots Sister
The accused mother, Tonya Charisse-Annice Johnson, is a 41-year-old woman from Detroit. Authorities say she left her five children alone in a car while she went inside a restaurant to collect a food order for her work as a delivery driver with DoorDash.
According to the Detroit Police Department, the incident happened around noon on Monday in a parking lot on Harper Avenue.
While Johnson was inside the restaurant, her five children—aged between 2 and 11 years old—remained in the vehicle without supervision.
Unsecured Gun Found by 11-Year-Old
Police say there was an unsecured handgun inside the vehicle. Johnson’s 11-year-old son reportedly found the firearm while they were waiting.
The boy accidentally fired the gun.
The bullet struck his 6-year-old sister in the head, causing fatal injuries.
Officers responded to the scene shortly after the shooting and found the young girl suffering from a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later declared dead.
The child’s identity has not been publicly released.
Charges Filed Against the Mother
Following the investigation, prosecutors charged Johnson with several serious offences. The charges include:
- Three counts of second-degree child abuse
- Failure to securely store a firearm resulting in death
- Four counts of felony firearm

Prosecutor Highlights Emotional Impact
During the court hearing, Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Aniela Bosca spoke about the emotional consequences of the incident.
She said the boy who fired the gun will likely face lifelong trauma after realizing he accidentally killed his sister. Other children who witnessed the shooting may also suffer psychological harm.
Bosca described the situation as negligence, saying the tragedy could have been prevented.
Mother Appears in Court
Johnson appeared virtually in court on Thursday. Reports say she was visibly emotional during the hearing and wiped away tears.
Her defense attorney told the court that no one feels worse about the incident than Johnson herself.
Despite that statement, prosecutors argue the case involves serious neglect that led to the death of a child.
Johnson is scheduled to appear in court again on March 13, when further proceedings in the case will continue.
