A Kentucky murder suspect who was accused of killing and dismembering an unhoused man was shot and killed by police during a standoff just one day after being indicted, according to authorities.
Kentucky Murder Suspect Killed During Police Standoff
Michael Hristov, 21, was facing serious criminal charges, including murder, abuse of a corpse and assault, in connection with the death of Michael Howard in Louisville, Kentucky.
According to Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officials, Hristov was indicted on May 13, 2026. Authorities attempted to arrest him the following day, but the operation ended in a deadly officer-involved shooting.
Investigation Began After Disturbing Online Post
The case first drew attention in December 2025 when a post appeared on Reddit claiming that a serial killer was targeting unhoused people in Louisville and leaving satanic symbols near victims.
Just days later, on Christmas Day, an unhoused man survived a stabbing attack.
The investigation intensified after another victim was discovered dead the following day.
Victim Found Dismembered in Homeless Encampment
On December 26, police found the body of Michael Howard at a homeless encampment in Louisville.
Investigators reported that Howard’s body showed signs of severe mutilation. Authorities said satanic symbols had been carved onto the victim’s body, and several body parts had been removed.
Medical investigators determined that Howard was killed on December 24.
Evidence Allegedly Linked Suspect to the Crime
During the investigation, detectives reviewed surveillance footage connected to the earlier nonfatal stabbing and identified Hristov as a suspect.
Authorities later obtained search warrants for his residence, electronic devices and personal belongings.
Investigators recovered a backpack allegedly belonging to Hristov that contained blood evidence. Forensic testing later matched the blood to Howard’s DNA.
Police also discovered digital evidence that allegedly connected Hristov to the Reddit post warning about a serial killer.
According to investigators, the IP address used for the post was linked to Hristov’s residence. Authorities further claimed that an iCloud account associated with him contained disturbing images connected to the case.
Police Cite Troubling Behaviour History
During the press conference, police officials stated that Hristov had a history of concerning behaviour.
Investigators alleged that he had previously expressed an interest in serial killers, admired mass shooters and made statements about targeting unhoused individuals.
Authorities also claimed he had a record of interactions with both local and federal law enforcement agencies.
SWAT Team Responds After Indictment
After the indictment was issued, Louisville Metro Police and SWAT officers went to Hristov’s home to execute the arrest warrant.
According to police, Hristov allegedly began firing at officers from inside the residence shortly after they arrived.
Authorities said he also contacted emergency dispatchers and reportedly stated that he was armed and wanted officers to shoot him.
Standoff Ended in Officer-Involved Shooting
Police said SWAT negotiators spent approximately 20 minutes attempting to resolve the situation peacefully.
The standoff eventually escalated when Hristov exited the home wearing a helmet and a ballistic vest.
Authorities stated that the encounter ended in an officer-involved shooting in which Hristov was killed. Additional details regarding the shooting and any ongoing investigations have not yet been fully released.
Case Raises Questions About Violence Against Vulnerable Communities
The case has shocked residents in Louisville due to the disturbing nature of the allegations and the targeting of unhoused individuals. Investigators spent months gathering evidence before bringing charges against Hristov.
While the criminal case ended with the suspect’s death, authorities continue to review all aspects of the investigation. The incident has also renewed discussions about the safety of vulnerable populations and the importance of addressing violent threats before they escalate into tragic crimes.
